Dan Reeves,...Hall Of Famer,...great judge of talent.
We all know what Reeves did back in 2001. To be blunt, he traded away the chance to build the Falcons through the draft only to guarantee long-term losing seasons. To be fair, Reeves had this problem for three years and so did Jim Mora JR.
It's easy to go back and say this move was right or that move was wrong. But the trade in 2001 with the Chargers is not Reeve's first blunder as Grand PutBah, Head Coach/ GM in Atlanta.
In the Spring of 1998, before the magical season began, Reeves overlooked a Hall Of Famer. Reeves needed a young WR to compliment two great receivers as they were aging, Mathis and Martin. Reeves passed on Hines ward and instead drafted,...Jammi German
There are old Bulldog alumns who hate the Falcons. Ever wonder why the stadium in Athens fills over 80,000 and the Dome is lucky to sell out 70,000? I have personally heard tales of how much Reeves hated the University of Georgia and it's football program. Reeves is from Americus, GA down around the southwest part, close to Alabama. He was snubbed by UGA when he came out of High School and went to play at USC,...South Carolina. It amazes me how people hold grudges, but there is a definite pattern of Reeves ignoring talent from some schools, as a GM, for personal reasons,...and this one bit him in the ass.
All you have to do is go look at Ward's career. German played in only 6 games in 1998 and Ward was getting his feet wet on his way to greatness.
I can see the thinking that the Falcons were set at WR with Martin and Mathis, one of the greatest WR tandems in NFL history for a season, but to pass on a talent because of where he played in college is foolish.
Anyway, this is what I got from an old UGA alumn,...oh and, everyone is embracing the new Falcons,...even UGA types.
