Schefter Suggests Jets As Landing Spot For Favre
Wednesday, July 02nd 2008, 7:51 pm by Gary Grund
I know what you are thinking…Let me bring you up to date.
Earlier today, Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com reported that Brett Favre wants to play football again and he made Packers head coach Mike McCarthy aware of his desire to return to the team and re-join them for training camp next month. Mort’s source says that the Packers would be reluctant to open the door for Favre. He is still currently under contract by the team for another two years, at an average of about $12.5 million per season. If the Packers resist a return, he could ask the team to release him so he may actively seek another job elsewhere.
Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal says that either Favre or his agent contacted the Packers “within the past few weeks” about returning, and the conversation ended in him asking the club for his release with the Packers refusing.
Recently on the NFL Network, Adam Schefter suggested that the Jets, Chiefs and Ravens as possible landing spots if the Packers decide to trade him. What it would take to acquire the nine-time Pro Bowler is unknown at this time. Schefter made it clear that he was not reporting any news or starting any rumors and that this was pure speculation on his part.
I think we all know as Jets fans that our biggest question mark going into this upcoming season is consistent play from the quarterback position. On one hand, you have the veteran in Pennington that has certainly wore out his time here in green and white, and on the other hand, you have the third-year quarterback Kellen Clemens, who is waiting to get a shot to prove himself in a full season’s worth of games behind a solid offensive line.
Favre would be enticing because you know you are going to get solid play and a full-fledged leader, but I would have to bet against Favre ever playing in 2008, and even more so with the Jets.
Update 10:06 p.m. EST - Favre told the Biloxi Sun Herald that these are all rumors.
Update - 7/3 - 11:49 a.m. EST - Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press Gazette, multiple sources confirmed that Favre has inquired about returning to the Packers.
