Bush was my choice in 1 of Hammer's polls.
But no way did I see him getting reps with the 1's this soon.
Jenny Vrentas@JennyVrentas
Both Demario Davis and Josh Bush taking some reps with ones in a sub package.

I think even in the draft they talked about trying Bush as the deep coverage safety in passing D sub packages (some 3-safety 'big' nickel looks, etc).
Bush & DD could eventually be seen as prime examples of personnel/coaching synergy.
- Coaches define the identity of the team (schemes, etc)
- Coaches define the roles needed to fulfill the identity
- Coaches define the necessary traits needed for these roles
- Scouts evaluate prospects relative to how their traits project to roles
- Value board is easier to assemble with clear picture of roster composition
- Drafts then fall into place even down through UDFAs
The great franchises get credited for being such great evaluators, but I don't think that tells the true story. They simply know how they want their team to be built -- to make the whole process easier. Once you get to that point, it's no longer about which round players are drafted in; it's about easily plucking guys who are the right types of players for the team, whenever/however they come. Doesn't matter if we're talking about the Steelers or the Spurs. They sustain themselves by knowing exactly what "themselves" even means.

I loved the Bush pick and think he can start by the end of the year. Bush I a better version of Lowery.

Great points. I think to a certain degree it's all semantics, it's still all "scouting" so to speak, but what does scouting really mean then? Judging player A vs player B straight up or adding a healthy dose of how well their game fits your scheme into that scouting? Player A might be a better football player overall but player B fits much better with your style and thus player B is better for your team and is the better pick and ultimately performs better than the technically "better" player A would play on your team.
I definitely agree with what you're saying. The great franchises don't just scout "straight up" better, they find the players that will fit the best into their schemes and that makes those players better from the get go.

That was the downfall of the Herm/Bradway era. There was never a clear team identity, and each draft was more or less a disjointed talent acquisition process -- rather than a team building/restocking process.
You still have to scout and project value. It's just so much easier to determine value when you have a clear picture of the traits you're looking for. You hone your skills looking for the right characteristics, identifying the ways players tend to reveal these traits. That's the best way to scout...basically a more passive role where you allow players to simply reveal themselves, in a sense (not literally, you still obviously have to go out looking).

Ironically, Herm inherited a Tuna team that was tremendous. The irony lies in the fact that Tuna was a rental, and he did everything for today, the exact opposite of the "Steeler" way that you describe.

Don't sleep on Bush. He will push Smith and Landry.

No question. Herm was a copy cat who had no clue what HIS team should be and instead just figured he would do what Dungee did. That's what I love about Rex. Certainly he has made mistakes and is learning on the job, but he came here and had a PERFECTLY clear vision in his mind of what "Jet Football" would be. Kudos to him for that. One glaring mistake was sticking with an OC one year to long who clearly was on opposite pages, but Rex knows what he wants and I think we are NOW well on our way to Jet football and Rex football.
2011 was an anolomly people!!!!!!!!
