Holy crap - Cowboys & Skins lose a combined $45 mil in cap space.

This is from Schefter.

Lost for illegally frontloading contracts in 2010.

It's $10 mil for the 'Boys & a whopping $35 mil for the Skins.

The teams can split the loss in any way they want over the next two seasons.

And Fantasy Dan takes another hit LMAO. He can't even get contracts right. Now he doesn't have either the draft picks or the cap room to sign significant FA's over the next 2 years in order to try to field a competitive team. You can't make this stuff up!

@AdamSchefter

All that money goes to 28 other teams -- $1.6 million each -- except for Saints and Raiders, who don't get any but don't lose any.

He could have explained why the Saints & Raiders don't get any!

From PFT:

As to the Saints and Raiders, who won’t lose cap space but likewise won’t get the $1.6 million per team that will be redistributed based on the cap space taken from the Redskins and Cowboys, it’s our understanding that the violations were far less severe. For the Raiders, the dumping of salary in 2010 arose specifically from the dumping of JaMarcus Russell from the roster.

Anthony Spencer - possibly a cut now - or did they already resign him?

No more high priced diva free agents. We need an influx of hungry young kids who are playing for that next contract to go along with the high priced core vets we already have. That and some older vets playing desrarate to stay in the league.

Sounds like it might end up with a "see you in court"!

On Monday evening, the Redskins and the Cowboys released statements, with the Redskins sounding as if they were prepared to dispute the findings:

“The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the N.F.L. concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the N.F.L. commissioner’s office. We look forward to free agency, the draft and the coming football season.”

The Cowboys’ statement said: “The Dallas Cowboys were in compliance with all league salary cap rules during the uncapped year. We look forward to the start of the free agency period where our commitment to improving our team remains unchanged.”

Florio's been saying they didn't do anything wrong.

I think they're bluffing but I also think it's about time someone stood up to Goodell.

I think the current whatever punishment Goodell thinks is right 'system' is a load of horsepoo.

Redskins, Cowboys could go “nuclear” over cap mess

Five days after the NFL dropped a salary-cap bomb on the Redskins and the Cowboys, the teams could be retaliating with a bomb of their own.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the Redskins and Cowboys could be going “nuclear” with the NFL as soon as Monday.

More specifically, the two teams are contemplating suing anyone and everyone connected to the sudden removal of $46 million in total cap space over the next two years, based on the contention that their treatment of the term “uncapped year” too literally somehow created a competitive disadvantage. Even though no rules or policies were violated.

The teams will spend the weekend examining every possible option. ”Who can I sue and how can I sued them?” will be the operative questions. (It’s unknown whether a “suance” is being considered.)

Adding to the teams’ frustration, we’re told, is that the deal to take away the cap money was brokered between NFLPA executive DeMaurice Smith and the NFL Management Council Executive Committee, without a full vote of NFLPA leadership or NFL ownership. The chairman of the CEC is Giants owner John Mara, whose team benefits directly from the removal of cap room from two of his chief division rivals.

It’s unknown whether the Redskins and Cowboys are bluffing in order to force a compromise, or whether they indeed truly intend to file suit. Reducing the allegations to writing necessarily will expose that the league was engaged in collusion in 2010, which could have all sorts of unintended consequences for the entire NFL, including the Redskins and the Cowboys.

And so the real question is whether the Redskins and Cowboys are angry/crazy enough to drop a grenade into a room they won’t be able to escape.

The answer very well could be yes.

‘Skins scratch and claw for salary cap space

Faced with the removal of $18 million in spending allotment due to sins of salary caps past (even though they didn’t do anything wrong), the Redskins are still trying to do business in free agency.

And they’ve been successful. So far.

In order to keep it going, they’ve had to begin restructuring existing contracts. Usually, that’s something that happens in the second year or later of a player’s deal. For center Will Montgomery, it happened in the second month.

Signed less than three weeks ago to a four-year $12 million deal, the Redskins reportedly have squeezed $2 million in current-year cap space by converting a portion of the contract to a guaranteed payment, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

While the report doesn’t specify the specific mechanism, the Redskins undoubtedly converted a $2.75 million 2012 roster bonus into a signing bonus, spreading the amount over the four years of the deal in equal $685,000 chunks, which reduces the cap number for 2012 by $2.0625 million.

The move seems to suggest that, as of February 28, the Redskins had no idea that the league was going to strip them of significant cap dollars in 2012. Otherwise, the Redskins would have paid the $2.75 million as a signing bonus in the first place.

As of Thursday, the Redskins had more than $11 million in remaining 2012 cap room. Freeing up another $2 million suggests that they still plan to do more spending this offseason.
