What I liked best about the Defense
I expected to see a lot of high risk/high reward type play from a Rex Ryan defense. I thought it would be a lot of the bring everyone, delay safty blitz, bringing the corner on a blitz ect, but really aside from a few nice twists it really was a pretty straight forward and dare I say vanilla scheme. Just good solid D, I really didn't expect that I thought we needed smoke and mirrors to make this defense good but somehow Ryan made them just a straight up smash mouth good defense.

Then they unleash hell. Like on that pick to Lito, Schaub was getting swarmed by three Jets with jersey numbers in the 20's...all on the same side.

Will be interesting to see how they play a team like NE who will spread them out the entire game.

The only little threat I see are those bubble screens. I think we need to work on those because we have NE next week

You fck with one of ours we rape three of yours... The general idea is that if we get burned on a couple of plays we will make it up at some point. We looked damn good out there, better than the Ravens did today, that's for sure, the thing is that now people will want to come here and play for Rex.

Vanilla? Looked to my inexpert eyes more like mocha almond supreme: blitzers were coming from all over the place -- here a couple of guys with numbers in the 20s, there just the backers. Jenkins was at linebacker on at least one play, I believe. and there usually were five guys coming, sometimes more. I didn't see good, solid defense. I saw great, creative, wild defense. and I loved it....

The best thing is it looked as if they all been playing in this defense for the past 6 years not 6 months.

Good point pope. And I was saying something along those lines as I watched yetserday. I fully expected there to be some glitches, some missed coverages with WR's running free. But I didn't see too many missed assignments. There were some times when we left some things open, but that was by design, not by mistake. What I saw was a D that was on top of the O almost every single play! Talk about smothering! Lito was not a liability because Schaub had no idea where the pressure was coming from. Bart said the plan was to hit him early and often, and that's exactly what they did. Schaub had happy feet the rest of the game because they thumped him so often early on. Its hard for the QB to focus in on one CB when he's getting thrashed like that! E. Smith played an outstanding game as did my boy Strickland.
The big thing that I saw in this game was Rex maximizing his available talent. E. Smith is a liability in deep coverage, but up tight to the LOS he's a tough pass defender, particularly on short yardage situations. Rex puts his players in positions that maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Its the same player as we saw last year, but making plays now, not costing us ones. That's pure Rex Ryan. And this D is only going to get better. I am still guarded about the season, but more optimistic than before. Let's see how we stack up against the Pats, the Titans, and the Saints before we get too high on this team, but you really couldn't have scripted a better opening day!

win lose or draw
this defense is coming for the QB
they could be up by 3td or down by 4td
doesn't matter
this defense is coming for the QB.
