Yeap, Talk about negotiating on a deadline. Vaughn Martin had boarded a flight out a here to Seattle, site of the next visit on his free agency tour, when his phone buzzed. It was his agent. Get off the plane, he said. The Dolphins made an acceptable bid: Martin signed a 2-year deal with Miami, certainly adding depth to an already stout front. Martin, who trains in his offseason months with center Mike Pouncey in Delray Beach, has said this much so far,

I’m a defensive lineman, you have to be interchangeable. My goal is to help the team win. This is exciting.

Martin is a Jamaican-born Canadian and at 26, started 27 games for the San Diego Chargers the last two seasons and amassed 66 tackles and two sacks. His strength is playing the run and at 6-4, 320 he's a better fit for defensive tackle in Miami's 4-3 scheme. Martin was mostly the left defensive end in the Chargers 3-4. It was the second signing in as many days by the Phins, who added guard Lance Louis yesterday.

Martin is expected to compete for playing time on a front that returns every starter – Cameron Wake, Jared Odrick, Randy Starks and Paul Soliai – from a year ago. He's taking up for Tony McDaniel as the first defensive lineman off the bench. McDaniel, in turn a free agent, will be shipped out to the Sqawks today. Ex-Miami Hurricane Olivier Vernon will also be in the mix for Miami.

Fins’ offseason workout program will begin on April 15 as the NFL announced Thursday. They will hold organized team practice activities May 21-23, May 29-31 and June 3-6, and the team’s mandatory minicamp will be June 11-13.
