    Finsiders Projects F.A. Signing

The NFL stops counting free agent acquisitions against the compensatory draft pick formula May 12. That means there should shortly be another round of free agent signings.

According to Kevin Nogle, Miami currently has about $18.5 million in cap space to spend. They have the most cap space in the AFC East, where the

    • Buffalo Bills have $14.2 million,
    • the Patriots have $9.8 million, and
    • New York Jets have $4.0 million.

Four rooks still need contracts, which will eat about $2.5 million of that space, giving the team around $16 million in space to spend. The Dolphins want to keep around $5 million for in-season operating costs and to sign players as replacements, and that would still give Miami about $11 million in space to add some veterans.

Fins will be able to start signing without risk after losing D.E.'s Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby, R.B. Lamar Miller, and W.R. Rishard Matthews. What's available? Some of the top options still available in free agency:

    1. Arian Foster, R.B.

Foster could be near the top of the wish list for the Dolphins. Jay Ajayi is set to be the starter next year. They did draft R.B. Kenyan Drake, too.

    2. Leon Hall, CB

Hall would like to be reunited with Vance Joseph, his former D.B. coach in Cincinnati. With all the young cornerbacks they are going to be utilizing this year, a veteran could help stabilize the position group.

    3. Jason Jones, D.E.

Adding him as soon as the May 12 deadline passes should not be a surprise. They can use depth. All they have now are several young players with potential.

    4. Amini Silatolu,
    or Louis Vasquez,
    or Jahri Evans G

The selection of Laremy Tunsil with the 13th overall pick doesn't mean all is done. If Tunsil starts L.G. this year, that gives Branden Albert at L.T., Mike Pouncey at C, J.J. at R.T., with R.G. still in question. Adding a veteran to the battle between Turner, Thomas, Douglas, and Bushrod cannot be ruled out.

    5. Dominique Easley,
    or Randy Starks, DT

Suh is obviously starting at one position, but the other spot is currently filled by Earl Mitchell/Jordan Phillips. Mitchell was not what Miami had hoped for last year, and Phillips may need time to develop. Easley could, at a minimum, rotate into the lineup, or they could look to bring back their former Pro Bowl player as a situation run stuffer, though it's not a likely option.

    And then there were Three

According to a follow up report carried by http://www.thephinsider.com/, cutting edge D.E. Jason Jones will be the third member of Detroit's front to sign onto the Fins D.L. and it'll be a done deal first thing Monday morning. Isa Abdul-Quddus also from Detroit, signed two months ago as a starting S, to replace the twice-sidelined Louis Delmas, who was also traded from Detroit. I sure hope J.J. and Isa A-Q work out under our new coaching arrangement, and that answers the remaining questions on D. If Dion Jordan stays clean, I think that the Fins defensive front will be the Beast of the East.

All we want to do is squash the Jets' and Bills' running game. The Fins Safeties and the addition of CB Vance Joseph should quell the Pats passing game.

    Just the Facts

Well Jason Jones contract I think is more than $1.5 million. This evening they closed 2nd Rd corner Xavien Howard to a 4-yr deal that'll cost them $3.71 million this year, leaving three rookies yet to be signed. Howard follows the signing of 1st-round T Laremy Tunsil for $2.265 million against the cap this year and signing bonus of $7.24 million, sixth-round selections WR Grant, S Lucas, 7th-round QB Doughty and TE Duarte, each for about $480,000 with signing bonuses in the range of 80-150 thousand.

On the downside, Howard is known for pass interference and Tune-sill has what they call a pre-arthritic ankle. Jones as many know is still in rehab too.
