Thread: UDFAs

    UDFAs

    Keith Baxter, DB, Marshall
    Kyle Carter, TE, Penn State
    Theiren Cockran, DL, Minnesota
    Jake Ganus, LB, Georgia
    Jhurrell Pressley, RB, New Mexico
    Eric Rawls, DB, Kentucky State
    Brandon Ross, RB, Maryland
    Joel Stave, QB, Wisconsin

Thought for sure KJ Maye would be there, but he went to the Giants. And no punter?

Jeremy Cash and Tyvis Powell went undrafted, signed with Panthers and Seahawks respectively. I think we should have drafted one of those guys. Kearse is notoriously disinterested and hasn't made many plays. He's going to need some big time coaching and an attitude change if he sticks.

I thought Devon Cajuste would make his way to Minnesota too but he signed with the 49ers.

I like the RB Jhurrell Pressley signing. He could have potential as a change of pace back. He is fast and quick. Based on his stats he was a productive runner, but didn't do much receiving. Hopefully that is because he wasn't used that way and not because he can't catch. Hopefully we can stash him on the practice squad for a year or two and see what he can do.

    Pressley's Pro Day results
    40-yard dash: 4.38 seconds
    Vertical: 33 1/2 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 9 inches
    Short shuttle: 4.06 seconds
    3-cone: 6.92 seconds
Bench: 25 reps of 225 pounds

NFL.com had a 5.4 grade on him which higher that 13 of the RBs that got drafted. They also had a 5th or 6th round projection for him.

I'm surprised there has been no mention of punter at this point. I find it hard to believe the Vikings won't bring in a punter to challenge Jeff Locke.

Pressley sounds like a Jerick McKinnon clone. Could turn out to be a good pickup if he can develop his pass catching ability.

Joel Stave is Taylor Heinicke's competition for the 3rd QB on the roster.

The Vikings hosted a regional combine at Winter Park back on March 4. Joshua Gordon and Eric Rawls both attended that combine. The complete list of players that attended the combine can be found here:

Darren Wolfson is reporting that Joshua Gordon a LB/DE from Minnesota State Mankato has been invited to the Vikings rookie mini-camp. Bob McGinn wrote and an article about him ( http://www.jsonline.com/sports/divis...375966971.html ).

In addition he's also reporting NDSU's Ben LeCompte is coming to Vikings rookie mini camp. Supposedly good punter and kickoff guy. So there's competition for Locke if the Vikings like this guy enough to sign him.

I'm surprised by the lack of "big named" undrafted free agents the Vikings have signed. I'm going to take that as a sign that the players feel that they have a better chance of making one of the other teams. This rational doesn't explain why we haven't signed a punter or two though.

They have invited two punters to camp. North Dakota State's Ben LeCompte and West Virginia's Nick O'Toole.

Vikings Fill Roster by Signing Two Players
    by Austin Belisle - May 9, 20160http://vikingsterritory.com/2016/general-news/vikings-sign-two-players-roster-now-90

Both have connections to head coach Mike Zimmer

The Minnesota Vikings signed two free agents to the active roster on Monday morning, bringing the team’s total to 90 players. Tre Roberson, a standout quarterback at Indiana and Illinois State, will play cornerback for the Vikings. Troy Stoudermire, the NCAA’s all-time leading kick returner and a former Golden Gopher, signed as a wide receiver.

Both Roberson and Stoudermire have connections back to Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer. In April 2013, Stoudermire signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent, but was released before the start of the regular season. He spent a few months in Cincinnati with Zimmer, who was the Bengals’ then-defensive coordinator.

Though Roberson didn’t play for Zimmer, both attended Illinois State, where Zimmer spent time as both a quarterback and linebacker. His collegiate career was cut short after suffering a neck injury that required surgery by doctors at the Mayo Clinic. Zimmer would eventually work his way up the coaching ranks before landing the head job with the Vikings in 2014.

A familiar face to those in Minnesota, Stoudermire joins the Vikings after spending three years north of the border. According to Craig Peters, the Texas native played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from October 2013 to June 2014 and signed a contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in late 2014. There, he put his return abilities to use, earning honors as the CFL Special Teams Player of the Week after a 64-yard punt return during the Labor Day Classic.

Like Stoudermire, Roberson has the ability to play multiple positions for the Vikings. He set multiple passing and quarterback rushing records at Illinois State, leading the Red Birds to a berth in the FCS Championship Game in 2014. The dual-threat quarterback’s 2015 numbers were impressive as well, with Roberson rushing 123 times for 777 yards and 11 touchdowns.

With the signings, the Vikings currently have no room to add to the active roster. When training camp begins in July, general manager Rick Spielman will have a few difficult decisions to make about his talented group of players.
