Shut out at home for the first time since1977 :tsk:
Here is Maiocco's review
Quarterbacks
1-Troy Smith: He did not get great protection and he did not do a good job of avoiding sacks. Though, it should be noted that three of the sacks happened late in the fourth quarter after the score was 21-0. Smith completed 16 of 31 passes for 148 yards with one interception. His one pick was a poorly thrown ball at the left sideline on which cornerback Ronde Barber, who was underneath Josh Morgan, made the play. Smith was the 49ers' leading rusher with 45 scrambling yards on five rushing attempts. He did not seem comfortable when he was hemmed inside the pocket.
5-David Carr: Inactive, emergency third quarterback.
11-Alex Smith: Did not play.
Running backs
20-Brian Westbrook: Played a season-high nine snaps. Did not have any official rushes or receptions. His only touch, a 5-yarder, was nullified by holding penalty.
21-Frank Gore: He played 46 snaps, and gained just 23 yards on 12 rushes. He turned a short pass early in the game into a 14-yard gain with a nice move to avoid the initial tackle attempt. He dropped a pass thrown at his left shoulder on a third-and-3 in the second quarter. He missed a blitz pickup on Geno Hayes that resulted in Smith being forced to throw the ball away. He also didn't help Rachal on a play in which defensive tackle Gerald McCoy got a half-sack. He finished with five receptions for 37 yards.
24-Anthony Dixon: Did not play any offense, but he batted down fourth-down pass when the Bucs tried a first-quarter trick play out of punt formation.
44-Moran Norris: Played 11 snaps, and the 49ers had no success on those plays. They were sacked three times on six pass attempts, and five runs plays with him as the lead-blocker netted just 5 yards.
Wide receivers
10-Kyle Williams: Was active for the first time since the first week of the season and played five snaps from scrimmage. He also averaged 8.0 yards two punt returns, as he assumed those duties from Ted Ginn. He also handled one fair catch.
15-Michael Crabtree: Played 52 snaps, and caught just one pass for 15 yards. There were two passes that went his way.
17-Dominique Zeigler: Played 14 snaps, and did not have any catches. Also played on most of the special teams.
19-Ted Ginn: Played 17 snaps, and caught one pass for 7 yards. He was the 49ers' No. 3 receiver, but he was not on the field for the five snaps in which the 49ers used four wideouts. Ginn averaged 23.0 yards on three kickoff returns.
84-Josh Morgan: He played 44 of the 49ers' 55 snaps, as he left the game briefly with a shoulder sprain. Morgan missed block on safety Cody Grimm on first run play of the game, as Gore got stopped for no gain. Fumbled after 2-yard reception to end 49ers' first drive. He had a team-high 51 receiving yards on four receptions.
Tight ends
46-Delanie Walker: Played 37 snaps, and caught three passes for 27 yards. He also gained 3 yards rushing.
82-Nate Byham: Played just one snap from scrimmage in a three-TE formation, as Walker gained 3 yards in an end-around.
85-Vernon Davis: Played 39 snaps and was not featured. He caught just one pass for 3 yards before aggravating his right ankle in the fourth quarter.
Offensive line
62-Chilo Rachal: Started at right guard, and did not have a good game. Roy Miller got inside of him to drop Gore for 4-yard loss in the first quarter. He did not pick up defensive end Tim Crowder on a stunt that forced Smith to scramble. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy beat him for a half-sack in the first half. Rachal had problems against McCoy's spin move.
64-David Baas: Miller beat him for initial pressure on first sack allowed of the game, as Smith was forced to step up. Called for holding that nullified a 5-yard run.
65-Barry Sims: Started at left tackle in place of injured Joe Staley, and looked rusty. Stylez G. White beat him for a sack in the fourth quarter. White also bull-rushed him for a half-sack on the 49ers' final offensive play. Sims surrendered a pressure to defensive end Alex Magee.
68-Adam Snyder: Did not play.
69-Tony Wragge: Played only on special teams. He fielded short kickoff and returned it 12 yards at opening of the second half to the 32-yard line.
74-Joe Staley: Inactive, broken left fibula.
75-Alex Boone: Inactive.
76-Anthony Davis: He had another difficult game with a couple pressures surrendered. Although none of the sacks were entirely on him, his protection could've been a lot better on half of those six sacks. Defensive lineman Michael Bennett beat him on a fourth-quarter sacks, and linebacker Quincy Black got pressure that contributed to a sack, too.
77-Mike Iupati: Although there wasn't too much glaring, he also did not have any blocks to open holes for Gore. Iupati gave up a quarterback pressure to McCoy early in the game that resulted in an incomplete pass.
Defensive line
90-Isaac Sopoaga: Started at left defensive end and did a reasonable job of holding the point. He recorded two tackles.
91-Ray McDonald: Got significant playing time in the rotation. He could not corral quarterback Josh Freeman on a potential second-quarter sack, allowing him to get to the outside for an 8-yard gain and a first down. Along with Lawson, stopped Blount for 3-yard loss early in fourth quarter.
92-Aubrayo Franklin: Started at nose tackle and recorded a couple tackles. While he was out of the game, the Bucs seemed to try to attack up the middle.
93-Demetric Evans: Entered to give Justin Smith a breather at right defensive end. Picked up three tackles, including a hustling stop down field after LeGarrette Blount tossed aside Parys Haralson.
94-Justin Smith: Started at right defensive end. Center Jeff Faine moved him out the way on a draw play up the middle that went for Cadillac Williams' 6-yard scoring run in second quarter. He had three tackles.
95-Ricky Jean Francois: Saw some action to give Franklin an occasional breather at nose tackle. The Bucs went at him for an 11-yard Blount gain in the first quarter. He did not record any tackles.
Linebackers
51-Takeo Spikes: A solid game with 12 tackles, as he remained on the field for the entire game, except when the 49ers went with six defensive backs. Had Blount wrapped up at line of scrimmage but could not secure tackle on 16-yard gain in third quarter. He made a big hit at the goal line on Blount to stand him up for no gain in the third quarter.
52-Patrick Willis: Recorded a game-high 13 tackles, along with two sacks. Got initial penetration to submarine Blount for no gain on third-and-1 in the first quarter. Came all the way around the right side to run down Freeman for a sack along the left sideline.
53-NaVorro Bowman: Was not used on third downs, so his role was almost entirely on special teams.
54-Travis LaBoy: Was used as a situational pass rusher, and did not get any hits on the quarterback. Recorded one tackle.
55-Ahmad Brooks: Came in as a nickel pass rusher and did not make much of an impact. He had no tackles.
57-Keaton Kristick: Inactive.
59-Thaddeus Gibson: Inactive.
98-Parys Haralson: Started at weak outside linebacker. He missed a tackle 4 yards behind line of scrimmage on first defensive play, allowing Blount to gain 3 yards on the play. Blount tossed him to the ground 8 yards downfield on a 12-yard gain in the second quarter. Got pressure on Freeman in the third quarter and should've had a sack, but he forced Freeman into an incomplete pass, instead. Finished with three tackles.
99-Manny Lawson: Started at strong outside linebacker. He missed a sack on opening drive, but Freeman was tracked down and sacked by Willis. Got blocked out of play by tight end John Gilmore on 12-yard gain early in second quarter. Got weakside pressure on Freeman to force a third-quarter incompletion. Along with McDonald, stopped Blount for 3-yard loss early in fourth quarter. He was credited with six tackles.
Defensive backs
22-Nate Clements: Gave Kellen Winslow too much to the outside on a third-and-7 pass in the third quarter that went for 10 yards and a first down. He recorded five tackles.
23-Taylor Mays: He did not play any defense until the middle of the fourth quarter in a goal-line situation, and he did not cover the right man, which created confusion on the defense. However, Freeman called a timeout before they could recognize there was an uncovered receiver. He later entered when Goldson exited with an injury.
25-Tarell Brown: Saw significant time as the 49ers' third CB. He held up well in coverage. On special teams, he ran out of bounds and was first player to touch ball when he ran back inbounds on punt. The penalty resulted in a 29-yard Bucs advantage after the re-kick. Tampa Bay scored on that drive.
26-Tramaine Brock: Inactive.
27-C.J. Spillman: Played solely on special teams. Nice one-one-one tackle of Micheal Spurlock in the second quarter punt return for no gain.
30-Reggie Smith: He started at safety in place of Mays and had one tackle, one quarterback hurry and one pass defensed. Got pressure off the left side to force incomplete pass on a third down in the second quarter. Went low to tackle Blount in the third quarter, but Blount hurdled him to gain an extra few yards at end of a 16-yard run. Called for defensive holding that gave Bucs a first-and-goal in the fourth quarter.
31-Will James: Inactive (concussion).
35-Phillip Adams: Entered game at left cornerback when 49ers went with six DBs. He did not see any action come his way.
36-Shawntae Spencer: Missed third-quarter tackle on Maurice Stovall, about 4 yards down field, allowing him to pick up 22 yards. Was in coverage deep, along with Goldson, when Mike Williams adjusted to underthrown pass for 33-yard gain. He was called for interference against Williams late in the third quarter, but the play went for an 8-yard touchdown anyway.
38-Dashon Goldson: Started at safety and recorded seven tackles. Delivered big hit on Winslow for a 6-yard gain on a third-and-9. Was in coverage deep, along with Spencer, when Mike Williams adjusted to underthrown pass for 33-yard gain. Left the game late in the fourth quarter with ankle and leg contusions.
Specialists
4-Andy Lee: Averaged 37.8 yards on six punts with a net 30.0. That's a result, mostly, of being called upon to punt three times in Tampa Bay territory.
6-Joe Nedney: Inactive (left knee).
9-Shane Andrus: His only action was on the opening kickoff. He did not hit the ball well, as it bounced outside the 10-yard line. He had not field-goal or extra-point tries.
86-Brian Jennings: His six deep snaps on punts were perfect.
