Share Rex Ryan Press Conference Notes 08/19/10

David_Wyatt on Aug 19, 2010

Notes from Rex Ryan's press conference earlier today on the morning session:

Defense dominated the practise. Offence had extra 3rd down work after, but today belonged to the defense.

Tony Dungy has agreed to come to Jets camp. No date set, but he's excited to come out. Had a man-2-man talk.

Brian Jackson was the rookie who was tied to the goal post. Fun hazing for the rooks, should be seen that way. Heard Jackson took it as a personal thing, but Rex will talk to him.

Assumes the performance of the back-ups will be better against Carolina. Says that it has to be and it needs to be.

If he had to choose one area of improvement, it is with Mark Sanchez. Knowledge of the offence, knowing where the hot routes are, how to check down and his accuracy has gotten even better even though it was a strength. Confidence in the receivers.

Lost the ability to check down when Leon went down last year, having LT here now is a huge upgrade in the passing game.

Braylon had a stunning catch again today. Rex said that Braylon has been "phenomenal". Braylon learning all the receiving positions. Santonio has taken to Schotty, and the combination of Braylon/Santonio and Cotchery. Add Coles in who has made some excellent catches, we are where we want to be.

Needs a season or a couple seasons to analyse the McKnight for Leon. McKnight has a ton of ability, Leon not as explosive his first year. McKnight will get better, just needs to hit it up in there and get that single. He bounced a run out today and went for 25 yards. Joe doesn't have to be Leon, he just has to be himself. McKnight needs to run inside. It's just a matter of time for McKnight.

Boris Lee has been signed, a linebacker. One of his first plays today was meeting John Conner in the hole. Borris will play against Carolina.

Westerman, Cummings and Brad Smith all took today off as part of winning the Iron Jets awards.

Got a big night of "King Ugly", Jeopardy and a Magician. They have a night out tonight, but everyone has to do something with a team mate. Doesn't matter what it is, but you have to take a team mate. This is a close football team.

Nobody is ruled out of Carolina game yet, but Satele and Mauga are still not practising. Starters will go about a quarter. Brunnel will get a series, Coles will play a lot more.

Lot of good candidates for King Ugly this year.

This years camp went much smoother. As good as a camp he has been around.

Vernon is realizing his strength, and now he's starting to knock some people around. Can see some confidence and Rex is excited about the way he is playing.

Thinks Kris Jenkins is better this year than he was last year. Him and Mangold get after each other, very few who can hold their ground against Kris, but Mangold is one of them. They are improving each other. Better technique player now which is scary for the league.

Will be hard pressed to find a better defense than ours. However you still have to get out on the field and prove it, and that's the standard which is going to be here for years.

Rex and Dungy speak 'man to man' »

By Kevin Armstrong

CORTLAND - Tony Dungy returned Rex Ryan's phone call, and two spoke "man to man" according to Ryan about Dungy's criticism of his language on HBO's all-access show, Hard Knocks. Dungy accepted Ryan's offer to attend practice with the Jets.

"He told me his position," Ryan said. "I definitely told him mine."

Ryan has never met Dungy, the former Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach who now serves as an analyst with NBC. Earlier in the week, Dungy said that he would never hire Ryan on one of his staff's because of his language and went so far as to suggest that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should speak with Ryan about his on-air language.

"It was good," Ryan said of the conversation.

And on the last day, the veterans imposed their will on a rookie.

Cornerback Brian Jackson was lifted off the field by Kris Jenkins and held up by two other teammates. His feet were then tied together with a piece of yellow rope by linebacker Bart Scott. White athletic tape further tethered his legs and his hands were hogtied. From there, he was carried to the goalpost and had two Gatorade containers poured on him as well as a small bottle by linebacker Jason Taylor.

"I think he kind of realized then that it's a team sport. This is a team sport. So you either going to be about the team, or you're going to be an individual," Jenkins said. "And he got to be an individual on the goal post. So I think he understands now, being an individual in a team sport isn't too bright."

Jackson's sin? Mouthing off to secondary coach Dennis Thurman.

"Team bonding!" shouted safety Jim Leonhard.

Ryan said that Jackson seemed to take it personally. He said he would speak with the Oklahoma product as well, noting it was "training camp tradition."

Today is the Jets' last in Cortland. The afternoon practice will be the final session before breaking camp. The team flies to Carolina tomorrow for Saturday's game against the Panthers. They will then practice back at the home facility in Florham Park, N.J.

Ryan said team activities are scheduled for the evening, including King Ugly, a magician act and more bonding.

"You can have a bible study, go drink a beer, see a movie as long as it is with a teammate," Ryan said.

Who is Brian Jackson? what are his odds of making it even on the P.S.? sounds like he is not on a good foot right now with his coach and some players, I know this is all part of the rookie hazing, but doesn't sound like he took it too well and that could lead to further problems. and taking back to your Secondary Coach? he should be kissing his ass, hoping to get a spot on the team. I wonder if they got any of this for Hard Knocks? That would be awesome to see him getting taped up on one of the upcoming shows.

Same article said that the CS gave their blessing to Bart to do this.

Have to agree with you T, doesn't sound too good for this rook. A real long shot to begin with, but this doesn't help.

JAckson had some of the biggest hands in this draft, he's long and strong... not a blazer but I think he could be a heck of a special teamer and backup corner for the long haul. Maybe better than Cole.

Is this a joke?

Brunell got here a little over two weeks ago he has a "lock" on the #2 job, he's still learning the system and trying to build chemistry with the receivers, he barely played on Monday night (and looked horrible the few plays he was in for) and he's only going to get "a series" against the Panthers?

Rex's handling of the backup qb situation makes no frickin' sense to me! Has he lost his mind?

As well as get some reps for O'Connell to see if there's any chance he can be the #3.

It doesn't make any frickin' sense

Any way you slice it

If Brunell is gonna be the #2 HE HAS TO BE READY TO PLAY

He needs the reps/playing time.

Yeah, he's lost his mind and you should be hired to be the Head Coach.
