View Full Version : New stadium underwhelming compared to new Yankees and Mets stadiums

The new Meadowlands Stadium is listed at 1.6 Billion, topping the cost of the new Yankees Stadium which cost 1.5 Billion, and Citi Field which cost 800 Million, but I hear from fans who went to see Bon Jovi that they both blow the new football stadium away.

Here is one fan's comments from another board, some good comments, but not worth the price of PSLs:

For anyone interested ... I was there on Wednesday night for the Bon Jovi show.

I've got to tell you guys, I was NOT impressed with the new stadium. Compared to Yankee Stadium or Citifield, from a cosmetic standpoint, the stadium is nothing spectacular to look at, especially on the outside. I'd even say it's very boring asthetically with NOT alot of character. It's your typical, round bowl, "cookie cutter" football stadium and it's MASSIVELY HIGH. If you're sitting in the upper deck at this stadium, it would be like sitting in an imaginary fourth deck in the old Giants Stadium. It's THAT high.

Once you're in your seat, aside from the grey seats, and the 4 HD screens in each corner of the endzones, it reminds me very much of the old Giants Stadium inside. Perhaps they'll have some better signage during the football games, Jets/Giants photos and paraphanalia, etc... there was none of that on this particular night.

A few other things I noticed:

*
Much more room in the concourses with plenty of concession stands and plenty of bathrooms, both men's and women's. I did not wait on a single line to take a leak or buy a beer all night. Of course, there weren't as many people there for a concert as there would be for a football game ... probably about 60,000 people there on Wednesday night, compared to about 80K for a football game, but I still didn't have to wait for anything. Beer was warm at a number of stands, though. And the price for four 12 ounce bottles of beer? A meer $40.

*
The access to the stadium lower level is different from the old stadium. In the old stadium, you took an escalator even to the lower level and then walked DOWN to your seats. In this stadium, you walk down from the parking lot into the stadium via ramps, then walk UP to your seats. Not sure about the upper levels, but I did hear some horror stories about people in the upper deck not being able to get out of the stadium for a half hour after the show. Apparently to access the upper deck, you need to take multiple escalators, sort of like MSG, only more mazelike.

*
One thing I noticed was that while it was pretty breezy in the parking lot prior to AND after the show, there was no wind in the stadium at all where I was sitting. Maybe it was just that night, but could be that the construction of this stadium minimizes the wind inside the stadium moreso than the old one. Might be good news for Sanchez ... something to keep an eye on.

*
Another thing I noticed was that the corners of the endzones are dangerously close to the lower tier walls. They may have to do something about that. I could see receivers getting seriously hurt catching fade passes in the end zone, it's THAT close to the walls.

*
The stadium lights give off tremendous heat. For the concert, they only turned on the lights on the far side of the stadium, and it was incredible bright and and incredibly hot. I was drenched when I walked out of the stadium and you could feel the heat of the lights pounding on you even in the lower level.

*
The 4 built-in stadium HD screens in each corner of the end zones are awesome, but for some reason, were only utilized to show the band during the last song of the concert. Not sure if that was a technical glitch, but when utilized, the screens were absolutely beautiful.

*
The parking lot seemed to be more organized, with traffic flowing much better. We left my house in Rockland at 6:05 and we were sitting in our parked car having a few beers at 6:45. Show ended at 11:15 and we were home swimming in my pool by 11:50pm.

*
I didn't venture into any of the club seats or the clubs themselves, and I'm sure they're all very nice. But I go to the stadium to watch the football game from my seats, not sit in a bar. If I'm gonna do that, I may as well sit in my mancave with my own bathroom, and my own refridgerator, and my own channel remote and watch as many games as I want. And sitting in my stadium seats in this stadium is not worth the money they want for it.

Overall, a good experience, but aside from not having to wait on a lot of lines, not terribly different from the old one and MUCH more expensive.

I'm glad I didn't take the PSL plunge.

In my opinion, both new NY baseball stadiums blow this place away.

My friend went to the Bon Jovi concert and he also said he was not impressed witht he stadium

I read that sitting in the first row of the upper deck in the new stadium will be like the eqivalent of sitting in the last row of the upper deck in the old stadium.

I read a couple of posts like that, that the stadium is so high, that in the upper deck, you are a lot higher up from the game, that it would be equivalent to being on a 4th level in the old stadium.

But its all about he luxury suites, and as long as they have a great view with all the comforts you could ask for, that is all that matters to them because that is where the money will be coming from for the next couple of decades until they decide it is time to buil a new stadium and charge PSLs all over again.

Higher but also closer. They may be up as high but they are much closer over the field then the equivelent height in the old stadium where you were also far back. That's exactly the same as new Yankee stadium. The new top tier is higher and steeper than the old one, but at the equivelent height, you are closer to the field. It's pretty hard to ADD seats and not have some be higher or further. But I bet there are still MORE seats overall that are better than the old stadium.

Besides, I bet this stadium will be just fine and dandy during an AFC Championship game.

Like this person, I went to the first event at the new Cowboys stadium which was also a concert:

* Price of Cowboys stadium i believe was just over 2 billion, but not positive.
* The stadium is off of Interstate 30, and this thing literally looks like some kind of Mecca from the road. It's pretty impressive.
* They definitely had issues at the opening event similar to what you said about warm beer. When I walked into the stadium it literally smelled like they had finished painting about an hour before. I was in a suite and there was a problem getting food to the suite. It was very late getting delivered. Also, heard the concessions stands ran out of buns. I think these are typical issues with the first event. By the NFL opener these will all be resolved as they were at Cowboys stadium.
* I looked in the upper decks to see how far away the highest seats were. Talk about nosebleeds! Basically same comment made about new Jets stadium.
* Wide, roomy concourse here as well.
* I have been back once since the first event and have to admit that I was shocked at how little there is to actually do at the stadium. I figured there would be a bunch of really great pro shops but I sure didn't see them. It was like being in a big hotel. There were a few stunning bar areas but my feeling is the same as the other guy. I'm going to a game not going on vacation. I don't need a hotel-like atmosphere. It does nothing to enhance the experience for me.
* As expected, food and beer is stupid expensive. Did not see ANYTHING cheaper than $8.00. Seemed to be your typical fast food mentality...expensive-as-hell huge portions of junkfood. No option to buy a small nachos, just this giant portion that nobody would want to finish for like $13.00.
* The field itself is well setup. Viewing angles are good and it's nice and bright. One thing I thought was really cool is that there are tons of windows in the place. Even when the dome is closed lots of natural light gets in during the day. i did not have any issues with the lighting, day or night.
* Parking was $40 bucks!!! That just sucks anyway you cut it.
* The scoreboard is amazingly clear and it's so huge you can't help but look at it. Oddly enough, that's one of my main gripes. I found myself at both events (a concert and the Oklahoma/BYU football game) wathing the scoreboard more than the event. I had good seats for both. The concert I was in a suite, the game I had lower level seats. But it's hard not to just sit back and watch the scoreboard. Is that really much better than sitting at home watching on TV? Not for me.

In summary...sounds like the Cowboys stadium is a bit fancier than the new Jets stadium, but Cowboys stadium was more expensive to build. I would never consider PSL/season tickets. The whole experience to me was like being in a giant luxury hotel and i just didn't dig it much.

i think it's kinda unfair to judge the performance of the football stadium by a rock concert...

if the NFL season rolls around, you see a Jets game in it, and it's still "underwhelming" well fair enough...

Even though I'm disgusted that I will still have to travel to New Jersey, to see New York Jets football, and the fact that I had to leave section 135, for section 301. I actually like the new stadium, over the old stadium, and my new nosebleed seats over my old muckity muck seats. (I hated being buried underneath the overhang!)

It is a fact that the new stadium is a lot higher than the old stadium, but I felt "closer" to the field than in the old one. In fact, when I used to sit in the very last row, in section 313, many, many years ago, I really felt like I was sitting in outer space! Now that I'm sitting in the end zone, just four rows from the roof, I don't feel like I'm sitting in the next county anymore...
I truly love my new seats!!!

I can't explain it...

I went to see the very first football game in the new stadium. (Giants vs Cowboys)... Other than the heat, which was the ridiculous! Especially after they bragged about their ludicrous central air conditioning system the day before the game, during a stadium tour. It was like a sauna in there!
Other than that, I have to admit, the new Cowboys stadium was a palace!

PS: Thank God we had end zone seats for the game, because that scoreboard is way too big! I was getting dizzy just watching it during the stadium tour!!!

Good news BBJ! That's pretty much the exact opposite of what happened when the Pats opened the new CGI Field, uh, .. I mean Gillette Stadium. lol Fans felt like they became removed and detached.

iT SEEMs like the lower level is really on top of the field though. That poster was dead on in saying that the endzone wall is dangerously close to the back of the endzone. I noticed that too in pictures. I think its cool the fans will be so close to the field, hopefully nobody gets hurt and the PSL wine and cheese crowd that will be sitting in those seats will actually be making noise.

Woody tried his hardest for a west side stadium, it would have been a gem on the water with a ton of character.

Plan B will never be the ideal for anyone.

I'm pretty sure most fans will prefer the new stadium over the old one..
With the exception of the new ticket prices of course...
