Recap of 49ers' 2010 draft
The first Trent Baalke-Mike Singletary draft is complete with the 49ers selecting eight players during the three-day session.

Yes, we write that it was a Baalke-Singletary draft . . . because that's exactly what it was.
Singletary was asked if he had more influence in the draft than a year ago when Singletary was entering his first full year as coach and Scot McCloughan was the general manager.

"Did I? I'd say yes," Singletary answered. "When the season was over, I get really excited about the upcoming year. I don't want to go into hibernation and go relax. I want to know who's out there. I want to know their stories. I want to know where they came from. I have a vision in there. I want to make sure everybody understands what that is and that we're all on the same page."

The 49ers went heavy on the offensive line early. They added two more pieces to help the run game in the sixth round with the additions of powerful running back Anthony Dixon and tight end Nate Byham, a blocking specialist.

Phred's Comments in italics

The 49ers identifed two key needs - the running game and the return game and between the draft and the undrafted free agents went overkill. Two big blockers and a running back for the running game and no fewer than 4 kick returners. The three other areas of concern - DEOLB, NT and CB where depth was needed went either ignored (NT and DEOLB) or deferred until R7. In their defense, the 49ers did add Travis Laboy and Martail Bennett in FA at DEOLB, Karl Paymah at CB, and have RJF (R7 2009) and Khalif Mitchell (2009 UDFA) in development at NT. But in a draft loaded with DEOLBs and NTs I think they should have addressed these spots.

Here is a look at the players the 49ers added and how it plays into the big picture:

Round 1 (11) - Anthony Davis, OT, 6-5, 323, Rutgers

Split (1.82), 40 (5.36), Shuttle (4.97), Cone (8.17), EQ40 (5.40), RSI (5.31), EXPL (60.9)

The 49ers considered right tackle to be their biggest weakness. The 49ers probably did not need to give away a fourth-round pick to move up two spots. (Some thought they could have moved back in the first round and still gotten their guy.) But Baalke and Singletary did not want to take any chances, and that's completely understandable. Davis will compete with Snyder. The 49ers already have veteran Barry Sims as a swing backup tackle.
I agree giving up the 4th really hurt our day 2 draft. While Davis obviously has talent, and has lost a lot of weight, he still needs to undergo a body transformation like Alex Boone. His times at the Combine indicated he is a long way fom being in shape. On the bright side, I agree with most analysts that Davis is capable of playing the left side once he gets in shape. That fact alone gives us the kind of depth on the Oline we haven't had in years. Our grade 1B.

Round 1 (17) - Mike Iupati, OG, 6-5, 331, Idaho

Split (1.84), 40 (5.24), Shuttle (4.93), Cone (7.85), EQ40 (5.31), RSI (5.16) EXPL (62.0)

It would've made sense to take a cornerback at this spot in the first round. A case could even be made to take guard/center Maurkice Pouncey. But the 49ers fell in love with Iupati's size and aggressive approach. That will serve him - and the 49ers - well in the run game. But he'll have to tone down his aggressiveness in pass protection. He'll compete against David Baas for the left guard position. Baas is signed through this season, and it's pretty clear he does not fit into the team's long-term plans.
I love this guy as our eventual left guard. But his tape suggests he needs a lot more technique work. His Combine numbers are also slower, and less powerful than his tape would indicate. Coach Solari and the training room staff are going to have their hands full this offseason getting these guys ready. Our grade 1B

Round 2 (40) - Taylor Mays, S, 6-3, 230, USC

Split (1.45), 40 (4.31), shuttle, (4.24), Cone (6.95), EQ40 (4.46), RSI (4.26), EXPL (75.4)

Mays played 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage at USC. In the NFL, his best fit is as a box safety to help in run support. Dashon Goldson, a former cornerback, is better-suited for free safety. This move would seem to impact veteran Michael Lewis. But, not so, says Baalke. "Michael Lewis is the starter," Baalke said. "You draft a guy like Taylor Mays at the level that we drafted him, certainly you want to get him on the field, but Michael Lewis is the starter and he's one of the best leaders on this football team. I know how competitive he is. He's just not going to give his job away."
As much as I don't like this pick, I realize the 49ers had to make it. An upgrade over Michael Lews was necessary and the 49ers found a stronger, bigger, and more athletic version of Lewis. The problem is that the upgrade was supposed to include the ability to cover WRs. Mays can't do that. The film says he can't cut, or move laterally. His Combine times confirm that as they translate to 4.5 speed, not the 4.3 speed he showed in the 40. What this pick says is that Mays will play in the box and the 49ers are confident in Goldson's ability to cover and make plays on the ball and are also very confident in their nickel back -they just don't know who he is yet. Our Grade 1B

Round 3 (91) - Navorro Bowman, ILB, 6-0, 242, Penn State

Split (1.60), 40 (4.62), Shuttle (4.20), Cone (6.70) EQ40 (4.53) RSI (4.50) EXPL (71.3)

The 49ers expect Bowman to be a backup at inside linebacker. It might be a while before he gets on the field, but he should be a core special-teams player. The 49ers took Scott McKillop for a similar role a year ago. Said Singletary, "This kid can step in and get some reps and try and get better and really get a good understanding of what we're doing. We have Scott McKillop. Scott McKillop is trying to get it. He's trying to get his game together and take it to the next level. It's just taking a little time."
Bowman is a stud, and like Mays a steal in the draft. Many sites had him as a late R1/Early R2 prospect before his off field problems surfaced. He had the 3rd fastest EQ40 among OLB and the fastest among ILB. His RSI was the fastest for all LBs. Explosion over 70 is excellent. Spikes is in his last year of his contract and he and McKillop will battle it out to be his permanent replacement. Our grade was 2C.

Round 6 (173) - Anthony Dixon, RB, 6-0, 233, Mississippi State

Split (1.67), 40 (4.61), Shuttle (4.45), Cone (7.09), EQ40 (4.59), RSI (4.40) EXPL (58.1)

Dixon led the SEC with 1,391 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He could become the 49ers' short-yardage back. He'll definitely be in competition with Glen Coffee for the right to enter games when Frank Gore needs a breather. Or maybe the 49ers will be more proactive about giving Gore a break from time to time. "Jimmy (Raye) cannot wait to get his hands on him," Singletary said. "When you're trying to close out a game, that's the kind of guy you want in the fourth quarter. When you're closing out a game, that's what you want." Interestingly, the 49ers added another big back, Oregon's LeGarrette Blount, as an undrafted free agent.
Blount changed his mind and signed with Tennessee. But Dixon fills a need as the Goal line back. Too many times the 49ers have stalled inside the 10 and in short yardage situations because they can't run the ball. Now we have a bigger battering ram behind a better line. May see some time at fullback as well. Our Grade was 4B

Round 6 (182) - Nate Byham, TE, 6-4, 268, Pittsburgh

Split (1.69), 40 (4.97), Shuttle (4.45), Cone (7.05), EQ40 (4.77), RSI (4.61), EXPL (58.3)

The 49ers kept just two tight ends on the roster last season because they did not have a blocking specialist. They selected Bear Pascoe for that role a year ago, but that did not work out to the liking of the coaching staff. The 49ers are likely to keep three tight ends this year. The 49ers already have Joe Jon Finley and Tony Curtis on the team, but Byham looks to have a strong chance to make the 53-man roster as he can also play an H-back role and block out of the backfield.
While his 40 was sloooow, his cone and shuttle times were quite good (4.67 speed) indicating he has good lateral movement and can get into and out of cuts. He has great size for a blocking TE, but his explosion should be in the mid 60's not 58.3. He will have to get a lot stronger to be an effective run blocker which is what we need. Our Grade 7C

Round 6 (206) - Kyle Williams, WR, 5-10, 187, Arizona State

Split (2.50) 40 (4.40),shuttle (4.4.19), Cone (7.00), EQ40 (4.48), RSI (4.64), EXPL (53.8)

Williams' best fit is as a slot receiver. He'll compete against Jason Hill for playing time there. Williams can also be used in the return game as a complement to Ted Ginn Jr. The 49ers will have some good competition at the receiver positions with Williams joining a group that includes Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Hill, Ginn, Brandon Jones and Dominique Zeigler. After the draft, the 49ers added a dynamic return specialist, LeRoy Vann of Florida A&M, who also has a chance to make a major contribution.
I have to be honest, I think this pick is overkill. A smallish WR with good speed, but not the change of direction skills necessary to be successful who returns kicks is ot what we needed here. Didn't we already trade a 5th for Ted Ginn? I would have rather seen a DEOLB here. I guess the Coaches wanted real competition at KR

Round 7 (244) - Philip Adams, CB, 5-10, 192, South Carolina State

Split (1.58e), 40 (4.52), Shuttle (4.35), Cone (7.17), EQ40 (4.61), RSI (4.59), EXPL (n/a)

Adams joins a team that did not have a lot of depth at cornerback. He was the only player at that position of need that the club added. The 49ers will bring Adams into the mix to participate in the rookie minicamp and begin the process of figuring out where he's best-suited to play. "We like his competitiveness," Baalke said. "We brought him in here for a visit. We liked his demeanor. We liked his passion for the game. We like his upside. We think he's a young player with a lot of upside. And who knows? It's not a position that we've got a lot of depth at currently. You throw him in the mix and you see how he competes and you see how fast he comes along."
I'm not the only one who was stumped by this pick. ESPN, NFLDraftScout, and Mel Kiper all left this guy out of there databases. He does appear to have decent size, was an all league pick, and played in the post season all star game for players from historically black colleges. His team went 10 - 2, 8 - 0 in conference and made it to the 1-A postseason tournament

UDFAs
The following is the official 49er press release of signed UDFAs with my commentary in Italics

LB Mike Balogun – Oklahoma – (6-0, 240)

No data

Played for the Sooners for one season, appearing in 10 games (2 starts) and recording 13 tackles, including a season-high 6 stops in the National Championship game against Florida in 2008. Did not play in 2009. Starred at Lackawanna (PA) CC before transferring to Oklahoma. Named the Northeast Football Conference Player of the Year, while earning first-team Northeast Football All-Conference and second-team NJCAA All-American, racking up 86 tackles in 2007. Also added 1 sack, 2 INTs and 3 FFs. Earned degree in sociology. Born 9/28/83 in Upper Marlboro, MD.
I remember him playing really well in the National Championship game. Barrows is reportig that Balogun was declared ineligible for his senior season because he played semipro ball in Maryand before attending JC. OK so he is not a bad kid, just dumb.

CB Tramaine Brock – Belhaven – (5-10, 197)

No Data

In 11 games as a senior at Belhaven, posted 51 tackles, 13.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, 6 INTs, 10 PDs and 1 FR, while also returning 29 kicks for 505 yds. Spent junior season at Minnesota, totaling 73 tackles, 6 PDs, 1 INT, 3 FFs and 1 FR, before transferring to Belhaven. Prior to time at Minnesota, played at one of the nation’s top junior college programs, Mississippi Gulf Coast, helping the Bulldogs to a perfect 12-0 record and a share of the NJCAA National Championship as a sophomore. Totaled 72 tackles, 7 INTs and 2 FFs in 17 games at MGC. Attended Long Beach Senior (MS) HS, recording 57 tackles and 4 INTs as a junior, while rushing for 690 yds. and 5 TDs. Majored in communication studies. Born 8/20/88 in Gulfport, MS.
As a junior he was Minnesota's 3rd leading tackler and a key on their defense. My question - Why did he go home to Mississippi to play at Belhaven? Answer - He left Minnesota directly after the 2008 season due to academics

QB Jarrett Brown – West Virginia – (6-3, 224)

Split (1.55), 40 (4.50), Shuttle (4.39), Cone (7.24) EQ40 (4.73), RSI (4.72) EXPL (n/a)

Saw action in 38 games (15 starts) in his career and completed 268 of 421 passes (63.6 pct.) for 2,943 yds. with 16 TDs and 13 INTs, adding 1,138 rushing yds. on 234 carries with 13 TDs. Started all 13 games as a senior, and became the first Mountaineer quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yds. in a season (2,144) since Marc Bulger in 1998. A 2nd-team All Big East selection, ranked 2nd on the team with 466 rushing yds. and 5 TDs. Compiled a 23-6 overall record when he threw at least one pass in a game, including an 11-4 record as a starter. Earned all-state honors at Palm Beach Lakes (FL) HS and was Sun-Sentinel POY. Lettered four times in basketball and led the team to the Class 6-A state finals as a senior. Majored in athletic coaching education. Born 1/23/86 in West Palm Beach, FL.
The gem of the UDFA class. He will compete with Nate Davis for the #3 QB job. He could also earn snaps as a Wildcat QB. His cone and shuttle times do not reflect how shifty his running style is. I just think he didn't practice them. He has terrific speed and great field vision with the ball and throws accurately. It could come to pass that both he and Nate beat out Carr, which would leave the 49ers without an experienced backup unless they carry 4 QBs

WR Shay Hodge – Mississippi – (6-1, 214) Update 4/30 - Hodge not signed replaced by Brandon Long

Split (2.62), 40 (4.55), Shuttle (4.32), Cone (6.90), EQ40 (4.55), RSI (4.46), EXPL (54.3)

Saw action in all 50 games (29 starts) during his four-year career at Ole Miss. Ranks as school’s career-leader in receiving yds. (2,646) and ranks 2nd in recepts. (173) and TDs (22). Named 1st-team All-SEC as a senior after leading team in rec. yds. per game (87.3) and recepts. (5.4). Set single-season record for rec. yds. and became the first 1,000-yd. receiver in school history (1,135). As a junior, earned 3rd-team All-SEC honors and tied for the SEC lead with 8 TD catches. Lettered four years in basketball, earning MVP honors and averaging 25 ppg. at Morton (MS) HS. Majored in journalism. Full name is Vareion Deshay Hodge. Born 10/18/87.
Solid pickup. A productive possesion receiver who is not afraid to go over the middle and get the first down. Good size, but not a burner. Our grade 7A

LB Keaton Kristick – Oregon St. – (6-3, 234)

Split (1.65), 40 (4.70), Shuttle (4.21), Cone (6.90) EQ40 (4.62), RSI (4.68), EXPL (62.1)

A two-year starter, played in 50 games (27 starts) and totaled 211 tackles, 22.5 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, 2 INTs, 2 FFs and 2 FRs. Earned first-team All-Pac 10 honors as a senior after leading the Beavers with 95 tackles and adding 7.5 TFLs, 1 sack, 2 INTs, 1 FF and 1 FR. In 2008, posted 84 tackles and 14 TFLs, to go along with 3.5 sacks. Starred at St. Mary’s HS in Phoenix, AZ, and was named first-team all-state as a senior. Played both LB and RB, leading the team in both tackles and rushing from 2003-05. Named the region’s Defensive POY. Majored in business. Born Keaton Kristick on 4/25/88 in Naperville, IL.
Good size speed combo with good productio. Kristick wreaked havoc in the Pac 10. Will add depth and competition to the DEOLBs. 49ers hope that he works out as well as his former teammate Victor Butler did in Dallas last year. Our grade UDFA

WR Scott Long – Louisville – (6-2, 216)

Split (2.58), 40 (4.46), Shuttle (4.09), Cone (6.45), EQ40 (4.35), RSI (4.20), EXPL (71.8)

Saw action in 35 games (13 starts) during his four-year career at Louisville, recording 91 catches for 1,286 yds. and 4 TDs. Led team with 53 recepts. for 727 yds. with 2 TDs in 12 games (10 starts) as a senior. Missed first four games of junior season while recovering from a foot injury and went on to catch 11 passes for 201 yds. and 2 TDs in three games before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. Played three seasons at South Brunswick HS in Southport, NC, where he received all-conference and all-county honors at WR as a senior. Also named all-county in his sophomore season for his play at DB. Performed on track and field team. Majored in sport administration. Born 10/22/86 in Southport, NC.
Terrific size, speed, cutting ability, and hands. Injuries kept him from producing to his full ability in college and cost him a spot in the top 255. Will probably be our #5 WR this year if he can stay healthy. Was rated UDFA on our board, but was #256

S Chris Maragos – Wisconsin – (5-10, 200)

Split (1.55e), 40 (4.47), Shuttle (3.98), Cone (6.55), EQ40 (4.36), RSI (4.47), EXPL (61.0)

Played in 26 games (19 starts) at safety in his two-year career at Wisconsin after transferring from Western Michigan prior to the 2007 season. Earned honorable mention All-Big Ten and the UW’s Tom Wiesner Award as a senior captain, starting all 13 games and leading team with 4 INTs to go along with 49 tackles, 6 PBUs, 1 sack, 1 FF and 3 TFLs. As a junior, saw action in 13 games (6 starts) and posted 45 tackles and 1 INT. Sat out 2007 season after transferring from Western Michigan. Played in 13 games (8 starts) at wide receiver in 2006 and caught 25 passes for 222 yds., while making 5 tackles on defense. Joined team as a walk-on in the fall and redshirted in 2005. Was an all-state, all-district and all-county selection at William Horlick HS in Racine, WI, where he was a two-time captain and team MVP. Earned all-conference 12 times between football and track. Father, Nick, was a free safety at Northern Iowa, and brother, Troy, was a former Bucky Badger. Earned a degree in business. Born 1/6/87 in Racine, WI.
Nice all around player that will compete at backup free safety with Reggie Smith. Former wide receiver appears to have decent ball skills as a FS. Type of overachiever that Coach Singletary loves. Our ranking UDFA

WR Jared Perry – Missouri – (6-1, 177)
Split (2.56), 40 (4.45), Shuttle (4.11), Cone (6.75), EQ40 (4.43) RSI (4.72), EXPL (54.6)

Played in 52 games (27 starts) for the Tigers and recorded 137 recepts. for 1,844 yds. and 13 TDs. Finished 2nd on the team with 46 recepts. for 696 yds. and 6 TDs as a senior. Amassed 41 recepts. for 567 yds. and 4 TDs in his junior campaign. Earned honorable mention freshman All-American honors and was named to the Big 12's All-Freshman team by The Sporting News after leading all freshmen with 37 catches for 429 yds. and 3 TDs in 2006. Starred in both football and track at La Marque (TX) HS and was named first-team all-district as a junior after notching 51 catches for 1,000 yds. and 8 TDs. Born Jared Perry on 3/29/88 in La Marque, TX.
Skinny WR with good speed and stats and a productive college career. He will need to beef up considerably to make his mark in the NFL. Will have a tough time making the team, but SF needs someone to replace Dom Zeigler on the practice squad and I think Perry is the guy. We rated him UDFA

CB Patrick Stoudamire – Western Illinois – (5-10, 206)

Split (1.55), 40 (4.52), Shuttle (4.14), Cone (7.00), EQ40 (4.52), RSI (4.36), EXPL (50.9)

Named first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference three times, totaling 134 tackles, 6 INTs, 41 PDs, 2 FFs and 1 FR in 42 games for the Leathernecks. As a senior, posted 37 tackles, 17 PDs, 1 INT, 1 FF and 1 FR in 11 games (10 starts). A season prior, tallied 32 tackles, 9 PDs and 1 INT. Had a breakout season as a sophomore, registering 41 tackles, 9 PDs, 3 INTs and 1 FF in 11 games (10 starts). Attended Centennial (OR) HS, rushing for 1,253 yds. and 15 TDs as an all-state QB, while also earning all-state honors at DB. Also earned numerous honors in basketball. Is the cousin of the NBA’s Salim Stoudamire (Milwaukee Bucks) and 13-year veteran (retired) Damon Stoudamire. Majored in biology. Born 2/21/88 in Portland, OR.
Stoudmire got a lot of hype late in the season and into February. The hype died when he ran 4.52. I don't believe it should have. While not as fast as you wwould like at 206 pounds he can bring a load and he has outstanding ball skills. He will cometefor a spot in our thin CB ranks and will at least make the practice squad. Our Ranking UDFA #260 overall

CB/KR LeRoy Vann – Florida A&M – (5-8, 177)

Split (1.56e), 40 (4.59),Shuttle (4.26), Cone (7.27) EQ40 (4.62), RSI (4.80), EXPL (62.8)

Became one of five players in NCAA FCS history to return both punts and kickoffs for at least 1,000 yds. in a career. Set the NCAA record with 11 combined TD returns, including 58 career punt returns for 1,033 yds. and 8 TDs, and 81 kickoff returns for 1,973 yds. and 3 TDs. Owns 5 NCAA return records, while tying another, and holds 9 school and conference return records. Also totaled 107 tackles, 13.5 TFLs, 3 sacks and 2 INTs in his career as a defensive back. Returned 29 punts for 569 yds. (20.2 avg.) and 5 TDs as a senior. The 20.2 average ranked 2nd in the NCAA FCS. As a junior, recorded 1,121 kickoff return yds. with 3 TDs and 464 punt return yds. with 3 TDs. Lettered in football and track at Howard W. Blake HS in Tampa, FL. Majored in criminal justice. Born 11/18/86 in Tampa, FL.
Do not let the times fool you. According to Gil Brandt, the field conditions were treacherous and really affected the times. I just gotta believe that a guy with this kind of productivity at the college level can be successful in the pros. Coach Singletary scouted him personally. Really excited to see him in preseason. We rated him UDFA

Brandon Long DEOLB 6' 3" 254 Michigan St.

Long was brought in as a UDFA last year, but could ot pass a physical, so he went unsigned. Has great size and speed, but was inconsistent in his play. He was primarily a 3rd down pass rusher at DE at MSU.

Tryout players (Supplied by Phil Barber who r eplaced Matt Maiocco@ Instant 49ers)

Aaron Kia 6' 4" 290 LT Hawaii

Here's another offensive lineman who will get a look at the 49ers' minicamp: Aaron Kia, a left offensive tackle from Hawaii whom the Niners want to see at guard and center. Kia is 6-4, 290 with fairly long arms (34 1/4), and he looks like a total bad ass with an island motif painted on his face in eye-black.

Alonzo Durham 6' 4" 286 OT Nevada

Just heard about another undrafted free agent expected to be in Santa Clara this weekend. It's Nevada's Alonzo Durham, a 6-4, 286-pound offensive tackle who grew up in the Sacramento area and was a three-year starter for the Wolf Pack. His absence from the team's official list of free agents probably means he's coming to town on a tryout basis.

Full List of tryout players - Barrows

CB Tramaine Brock – Belhaven – (5-10, 197)

As a junior he was Minnesota's 3rd leading tackler and a key on their defense. My question - Why did he go home to Mississippi to play at Belhaven?

Brock only spent one season at Minnesota because of academics. He left the school immediately following the 2008 season, suggesting that he would not have been able to participate without bringing his grades up. Subsequently, he was declared academically ineligible in July 2009. He transferred to Belhaven to play rather than trying to find a way back into Minnesota.
