Here is my best take on what the 49ers should do.
#13 - Trade
The top 3 OTs will be gone. Do the rumored trade with Dallas #13 exchanged for #27, #59 and #90
#17 - Trade
Iupati will be available, but it is way to early for a guard only guy. Proposed trade to Philly who would love to add Iupati to their Oline. Reid has a hstory or trading up for big uglies. #17 exchanged for #24 and #70
#24 - Devin McCourty CB/KR Rutgers
McCourty is just a playmaker. He will compete with Tarell Brown and Karl Paymah for the nickel/dime jobs and eventually end up our #2 CB long term. He is another upgrade to our special teams as punt returner (4 career TDs), gunner, and kick blocker (7 career blocks).
#27 - Trade - Jermon Bushrod
Bushrod is an RFA with a 1st round tender. He started the SB at LT for the Saints and is available because All - Pro Jamal Brown will be back next season. He will move right in at RT. Gettingan experienced RT would let us start a rookie at RG - bye bye David Baas.
#49 - Tyson Alualu DT/DE Cal
Mike Singletary has got to love this guy. He has played end and NT in the 3/4, and DT in the 4/3. He hustles 120% every play and delivers big production. He will be an upgrade over Balmer, Sopo, Evans, and McDonald and push one of them off of the roster. Finally we will get production and pressure off of the left side.
#59 - Linval Joseph/Cam Thomas - NT ECU/UNC
With no long term contract in sight for Franklin, we need to plan for the future without him. This draft has lots of NT and these guys are #3 and #4 on that list.
#70 - Jon Asamoah OG Illinois
Asamoah is big, athletic, tough and plays with a nasty attitude. He will replace David Baas this year or next. Hurt his shoulder in the Senior Bowl but recently worked out and had the fastest EQ40 of all offensive linemen. Academic All American as well.
#79 - Eric Decker WR Minnesota
Yeah I know he has the injury. But when healthy he is a top 15 pick talent. We park him on the PUP list early and then activate him and cut either Brandon Jones or Jason Hill; neither of which has been particularly effective.
#90 - Darrell Stuckey SS Kansas
Solid Strong safety with good ball skills. Terrific tackler. Production was off a bit this year due to some minor injuries. Showed he is healthy at the Combine running a 4.46. Cone and shuttle times were a tad slower bringing his EQ40 to 4.52. Explosion was great at 66.5.
#113 - DEOLB Daniel Te'o-Nesheim
Te'o will add a BIG DEOLB to the mix. He is a 4 year player with 30 sacks. Part of our problem in the past is we haven't had enough weight at the OLB position to hold the point and push the TE and OTs back. He will probably be the 5th OLB to start behind Haralson and Brooks on the weak side and Lawson and Laboy on the strong side. Both Lawson and Laboy have 1 year contracts though so it is time to build depth.
#145 - Traded to Miami for WR/KR Ted Ginn Jr
Niners made a great trade here to get a WR who stretches the field and returns kick for TDs
#182 - Ben Burney CB/FS Colorado
Ben missed the entire 2008 season, but came back very strong in 2009. He will complete makeover of the 49er secondary.
#206 - Alex Daniels LB/DE/TE Cincinnati
Daniels is this year's Connor Barwin, but not nearly as athletic. I envision the 49ers converting him to Tedbacker to back up and eventually take over for Takeo Spikes. At 6' 2" 265 he has the right dimensions and good speed(4.7)and outstanding explosion (78.3!) to take on interior linemen. He can also fill a need at blocking TE without taking up an extra roster spot.
#224 - Joe Hawley C/OG UNLV
Joe is an extremely athletic guy who deserves to go higher, but won't because he played in the MTN West. He ran a 5.15 40 and his explosion was off of the charts - 74.4. He will compete with Cody Wallace to be Heitmann's eventual replacement.
OK. That is it. have at it guys
