Tom Curran on Mark Sanchez

Posted on August 7th, 2009 by Bassett

Tom Curran was on The Jim Rome Show today and here’s what he had to say about his time in Cortland. It runs concurrent to an article he wrote on NBCSports.com that pretty much says a lot of the same things.

On whether Sanchez’s eagerness is too much ..

He is so eager and over the top of coveting the position, he’s running the risk of alienating the veterans there … and he better be careful what he wishes for. Sitting out your rookie year was good enough for Carson Palmer who won a Heisman at USC … he played 53 games Mark Sanchez played 16 games and he’s dying to start for this Jets team. … if he goes out and has a couple 7-21 games for 83 yards, he’s gonna get chewed up.

When asked about whether or not the veterans are not enthused to back Sanchez ..

I talked to D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and he’s as nice a player as you’re going to find .. I asked him about Sanchez and he spent 45 seconds to a minute talking to me about all the reasons he believes in Kellen Clemens. This dynamic is at play in Jets camp right now. Mark Sanchez has got to measure what he says and how he acts because he’s going to inadvertently lose that locker room.

Curran is a New England guy, and I think he’s a good reporter, but I do wonder if he’s looking a little too deep. That said, I do think that it’s a rookie’s job to earn whatever spot he eventually ends up with, but Rex Ryan has made it clear that one doesn’t draft people in the first round to let them sit around.

I understand that Sanchez is the bright shining future for this team, I just don’t want to see Sanchez jeopardize anything that might prevent him from being a top five QB in the league, for the Jets, for a long time. It’s what he was drafted to be. Confidence is one thing, myopia which damages his relationship with the team is another.
