(Opening Remarks)

“We had an injury today on the field, (T) (John) Greco sublexed his patella tendon. He should be ok, but they sent him down to get an MRI to make sure. Again it will be day-to-day, so when I get some information I’ll let you know.”

(On when G John Greco injured himself)

“He did it in individual. I’m not really sure how it happened, but I know he did it in individual drills.”

(On if RB Steven Jackson worked today)

“Steven didn’t work today. I would probably say he’s questionable to doubtful for the game. We’ll see what happens.”

(On if RB Steven Jackson had a setback with his injury)

“He didn’t look good yesterday on film. We thought he ran well on Monday and then he conditioned on Tuesday and looked bad yesterday, so we’re just going to see how he is. He’s going to have to run before he can play.”

(On if RB Steven Jackson has to show him that he is ready before he can play in the game)

“Yeah and I doubt if it’ll happen to be honest with you, but we’ll see. You never know.”

(On if it would have been better to shut RB Steven Jackson down for two weeks than have him practice)

“Well, he hasn’t done anything. He’s doing his conditioning, but he’s not really doing anything. I’m not a trainer, so that’s hard for me to answer that.”

(On what he means by RB Steven Jackson not looking good on film)

“He’s not putting it on the ground and exploding off it. That’s the big thing and until he does it, he’s not going to be really effective.”

(On if RB Antonio Pittman will be the starter)

“Yeah, Pittman will be the starter and (RB) (Ken) Darby and (RB) Travis (Minor) will be the other two.”

(On if he trusts RB Ken Darby to run the ball again)

“Yeah, as long as he holds onto the ball he’ll be good.”

(On if assumes 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz would love to put points up against him)

“No, he’d like to put points on everybody just knowing from the past and what he’s done to people. Yeah, I’m sure he’d like to put a lot of points up.”

(On if he used to feud with 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz)

“You know what, we really didn’t have a lot of communication, I didn’t know him that well. I kind of got to know him more when I came up here than I did when we were actually playing each other all the time. We’d go to the owner’s meetings and we didn’t really spend a lot of time together, but I like Mike. I think he’s a heck of a football coach and he’s always done a good job with the offenses. Wherever he goes puts up a lot of points and I think that’s the most important thing. Personalities and all that, I don’t know Mike that well from that standpoint, I know he’s a good football coach.”

(On the special guest Demond Hunt, a Junior LB from East St. Louis High School at practice)

“Yeah, (Executive Vice President/Player Personnel) Billy (Devaney) kind of told me about him about a month ago, I think it’s a little bit over a month ago when it happened to him and we’ve been kind of waiting for him to get out the hospital, so we could have him over as a guest. He’s a great kid and it’s a shame something like that had to happen to him and take away his ability to play football or sports in general, but the big thing he has to understand is there’s a lot of life left and he should be thankful for that. It was nice to have him out here. I know the players really appreciate it.”

(On if he has seen the intensity 49ers head coach Mike Singletary has brought to his team on the field)

“Well, you saw it last week for sure. We watched the game on TV and you could see it. That’s how he played the game and that’s how he expects the players to play; there’s a lot of carryover.”

(On if pulling his pants down to cheer up a team is a level of coaching he hasn’t crossed)

“No, actually if I was going to do it last week would have been a great time to do it, but it didn’t really cross my mind. Someone should have told me about it going into halftime.”

(On what is the strangest thing he’s ever done to motivate the team)

“I don’t know, I don’t think I do anything really strange to be honest with you, but I’ve thrown a few things and swear a lot, but I’m not really proud of that.”

(On if he has thrown anything this year)

“No, I haven’t. Not yet.”

(On if the players are understanding what their responsibilities are)

“I was more disappointed the way the whole thing came off last week. Just the way it got away from us so early and we never had a chance to really even get into it. Even when they got to 10 (points) and we got the ball close to midfield and then we turned it over; the whole thing was disappointing and it just kept mounting up. But games like that happen things like that happen in the NFL, you just hate to see something get away that fast. You put a good week’s work in and then the game’s over before you even have a chance to win the game, so that was disappointing. But in this game you have to rebound from it and you have to move on and can’t worry about what happened in the past. Obviously, you learn from your mistakes, obviously, holding onto the ball, taking care of the ball is a big thing and that’s what this game will come down to this week, who gets the most turnovers will win the game.”

(On if teams are defending WR Donnie Avery differently)

“Last week they did. They did a lot of things, they had two guys on him. They had a free safety over the top of him. We didn’t even get enough plays last week to even consider what teams are doing. We only ran 50 plays on offense. You should average about 70 to 72 plays on offense. We’re not getting enough plays to generate points. I think that’s the big thing we have to try to accomplish in the next month and a half.”

(On why he has so much confidence in QB Marc Bulger)

“I see what he does on the practice field. I’ve seen what he’s done in the past. The guy is 2 yards from being the fifth fastest quarterback ever to 20,000 yards. That’s pretty good company he’s holding. He’s going to throw a pass this week and be the 5th fastest ever. There’s a lot of great quarterbacks that have played the game and he’s going to be top five. He has numbers that reflect that. We just have to surround him with people, playmakers and I think we have a bunch of young kids that can do that. We have to protect him and do some things that make him feel comfortable. I think every quarterback goes through a phase in their career where it’s not going. When he came in, he stepped in with great personnel around him, playmakers galore – three or four receivers, a running back, a great line that had been together for a long time. He’s not in that situation right now. It’s a little bit different. Obviously, we’ll try to get back to that some day, but right now it’s not that situation.”

(On expanding WR Torry Holt’s role)

“Torry (Holt) has a big role in this game and we got Torry (Holt) more involved the week before last. Nobody got involved last week, so you can’t even talk about that. He plays a big role in this game for us to win.”

RB Steven Jackson

November 13, 2008

(On how he feels)

“Coach (Jim Haslett) allowed me a day off. We had pretty good work three days straight, Monday through Wednesday. Today the leg was a little swollen and a little stiff. They took the cautious approach and let me take the day off and see what it feels like tomorrow and see if I am able to practice again.”

(On if he thought he would have been able to practice today)

“We all kind of excluded what I did Monday and Tuesday. It was a heavy work load for three days straight and the leg kind of responded good. Today, waking up this morning, it kind of took a step backwards so we wanted to see what a day off would do.”

(On if he is going by how he feels in the morning)

“That is the approach that I am taking. I have been doing all that I can do with rehabbing and leg strengthening and now we just have to let it take its course. It really felt good to be out there and practice with the team and get a look at San Francisco but certain things are out of my hands at this point. Whatever I can do, I am trying to do.”

(On a percentage of how healthy he is)
“I don’t like the percentage thing but we saw against Arizona, if I am not 100-percent then I am like a wounded duck out there.”

(On how close to 100-percent he thought he was yesterday)

“I thought I was pretty much there. I still have to work on some strengthening and moving out of the hole cutting-wise ,but as far as being able to participate in a full practice since the injury, that was the first time I was able to do that.”

(On if he thought he would be back by now)
“When I initially hurt myself in the Dallas game, I thought it would be a day or two. I really did not think I would miss a game let alone two or three. It is frustrating because I thought it was just a strain and it would need a couple days off and I will back. For it to linger like this, it really makes you think about what is really going on there.”

(On if it is a tear in his leg)

“I have had two MRIs and the MRI is showing mainly swelling and inflammation in there. Unless it is a tear that we can’t see, and I am no expert at looking at MRIs, it is still considered a strain.”

(On if he should have set out a few games instead of trying to play)
“As a football player, you were always told that you can play hurt and not injured and we have been treating it as if I am just hurt. Maybe we should start treating it like I am injured. I don’t blame anyone. Not the staff because I wanted to get out there more than anybody. Maybe I have to sit myself down and allow it to heal itself.”

(On if he has gone through anything like this before)
“I did not miss a game in college. The NFL season is long. You have bigger and faster guys hitting on you. I do know that it is a different level. It is a different speed from amateur ranks and injuries are apart of the game. That is why you have backups so you can’t get down on yourself and you can’t wonder why you are hurt, you just have to fight through it.”

RB Antonio Pittman

November 13, 2008

(On being the starting tailback with Steven Jackson out)

“I’m aware of what he means to this team and I’m going to try to go out there and give it my all. That’s all I can do, leave it all out there on the field and play as well as I can.”

(On what he can do as a running back)

“I bring a balanced attack. I have speed and power. I’m a guy that can run inside and a guy who can get outside and break a long run.”

(On if he is feeling better)

“I’m feeling a lot better. As the days go on, it’s getting better and better. I have a lot of little nagging things but nothing too serious.”

(On if he thinks he is healthy enough to get 20 or 30 carries)

“Oh yeah. I’m down for it, you just have to get me 20 or 30 carries.”

(On if he has to convince the coaching staff to give him that many carries)

“I don’t think so. I think by now, they know the type of player that I am. They know I’m going to go out there and give it my all, coming back from the injuries I came back from and played in the game and played very well. I think I’m 100 percent ready for whatever task lies ahead of me.”
