Much of the Raider Nation is practically begging Al Davis to trade down and collect more picks. Of course, this is the real NFL and not a franchise on Madden ‘09, where you can get picks for practically anyone. The Oakland Raiders need a team that would be willing to a) Trade up to the #4 position and b) Offer the Raiders enough value to get from their position to #4. Who are the potential partners for a trade down and what would the Raiders get?

Thoughts From the Dark Side

One of the hot topics for Raider fans has to be the idea of trading down to garner more picks. Right now it makes sense. The Raiders still have multiple holes to fill with now limited salary cap space and a shallow free agent pool. The knock against that is the Raiders have as many first round trade downs in their history as Steven Seagal has Academy Award nominations. However what kind of blog internet journalist would I be if I didn’t look at some possibilities? Don’t answer that. I know I am to journalism what former New York Governor Elliott Spitzer is to wholesome, fulfilling marriages.

Going pick by pick you have to start at pick 5 where sit the ketchup and mustard wearers from Kansas City. The Raiders are more likely to trade with Cuba than Kansas City, plus with different needs (KC needs a QB, any OL help, a QB, another WR, a QB, a CB and a QB), they don’t need to move up a spot. At picks 6 and 7 lies the first possibilities. You have the New York Jets and the New England Patriots. I think the Patriots would like to leapfrog the Jets to get either McFadden or Gholsten. The first move I would consider making would be to threaten the Jets with a trade with New England. Using the trade chart popularized by Jimmah Johnson, the difference between the 4th and 6th pick 200 points. 200 points on the chart is pick 78 which happens to be in the 3rd round, a round in which the Jets do not have a pick because of the trade to acquire DT and president of the Warren Sapp fan club Kris Jenkins. Xtra Sports via poster BlackHeart on Raiderfans.net says there is a talk of trade for the Raiders to move down with the pick to pick 6 for DE Kenyon Coleman of the Jets as well as formerly of the Raiders. Kenyon is more of a base end than pass rusher but here is the question I would ask, would you trade a 3rd round pick for him? I didn’t think so. Maybe a deal that included Fabian Washington and the Raiders 1st round pick for the Jets 1, 2, and 5th round pick or Coleman could be better.
New England is the recipient of San Francisco handing their first round pick this year for a deal last year that got the Niners OT Joe Staley. They do not have their own first round pick due to the penalty for their little foray into voyeurism. The Pats have their own second as well as two thirds. You know where they got the 2nd third rounder. New England also has a need at corner back. Going from pick 7 to pick 4 is a 300 point difference or pick 62. The Patriots pick 64th overall. That might with a 5th round pick could work or I would propose an interesting solution. Trade Pick 4 and Washington to New England for their 1st, 2nd and the Raiders 3rd round pick. That seems pretty unlikely the Patriots would give that to move up but you never know with them needing to rejuvenate that old LB core or running game, anything is possible.

The Raiders do have recent trade history with both teams. The Raiders traded with the Jets before draft day 2005 with the deal that sent Doug Jolley and a 2nd round pick for the Jets first and 7th round picks. Last year the Raiders made two trades with New England. The first being the one to acquire Mario Henderson and the other was trading Candy Moss for what turned out to be John Bowie.

The next team in the draft with mulitple day one picks is the Detroit Lions who have an extra third from the Shaun Rogers to Cleveland deal. Detroit picks at 15th and is in need of offensive tackles as astutely noted by former Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz. It would take the at least all of those picks which is probably more than they would want to give up. The Raiders and Lions did deal last draft weekend, the Raiders sending their 4th round selection for Josh McCown and Big Mike Williams.

And of course, for that Madden franchise like fantasy deal, there is the potential deal with the Darren McFadden enamored Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has 2 1st round picks, a 2nd and a 3rd round pick. Dallas also has the need for cornerback. Jerry Jones has recently stated that the cost for moving up is too high. I don’t agree with that nor do I believe it. Jones is an Arkansas alum and reportedly would grin at the idea of having him if he could grin. Having your face vacuumed back to hide the wrinkles does that. Ask Burt Reynolds and Sly Stallone. The trade chart says pick 22, 28, and their 2nd round pick would be an equal deal. Still dealing Fabian Washington for a 3rd and a 5th rounder would be good for both teams.

I really cant see Al trading the pick, with the addition of Edwards i dont see gholston in the mix anymore and if Grady signs i can only see him taking Mcfadden, and if Long for some reason slides to number 4 then that would be really interesting, Al wouldnt know what to do, he would have a heart attack lol.

The best part about all this is that we are in the prime position for teams to move up. And it's not just Darren McFadden that draws interest, what about a team like Baltimore who fears losing the chance to choose Matt Ryan jumping up to that position to take him. Or Chicago moving up to get Mcfadden. Being at #4 is looking good for us. I agree with Lane Kiffin, i don't think the Raiders will be picking at that slot. I also believe that a deal is already in place, and i believe its with Dallas, but pending on more background checks by the teams on weather McFadden has anymore skeleton's in his closet. Dallas needs a prime time player to open their new stadium in 2009, and McFadden is the guy. Owens is getting older and his luster will soon fade. And Romo is not the franchise player Jerry Jones expects to lead this franchise into the promise land.
As far as Oakland is concerned, with the 28th pick from Dallas we could select DE Calais Campbell to give us depth talent and youth on the D-Line. With the 28th pick, Sam Baker from USC as our future left tackle. Things finally look promising in Oakland and getting need players will only help our chances is finally getting back to the top where we deserve.

absolutely....you also hafta think about the fact that if a DT or DE is picked before the 4 spot...the chances obviously slim down....look at cincy, they need to address DT bigtime and they are hoping for ellis but if dorsey were to go 1st 2nd or 3rd theyre gonna scramble! why wouldnt they want to trade up to ensure ellis or even Gholston at that point?? jets or pats leapfrogging either other- alotta trade partners.....this is the part i hate....the calm before the storm---way too anxienous!!!

I dont want a trade down unless its a blockbuster type that blows Al's supper huugies off, Dallas has two number ones which look nice but they are late in the round, a player thrown in plus a number 2 or 3 would do the trick. As for the pick if we stay pat and dont move i would like either Mcfadden or one of the big tackles. Either way no trade down unless its a blockbuster for us. And remember everyone theres a reason why teams like a dallas are willing to part with late picks to move up.

The reason teams like Dallas would part with late picks to move up is becuase they can afford to do so. They are 1 or 2 peices away from being legitimate Super Bowl contenders, we are far from that, therefore we need to rebuild, like it or not. And although McFadden is considered the best player in this draft, he is not why many would consider a can't miss prospect like Peyton Manning etc. was. There are many McFadden doubters out there, and those doubts make it almost impossible to pull off a blockbuster deal in the like of the Herschel Walker deal. No one wants to move up so bad to get a player and pay him top 4 salary, especially from a guy with as many doubts as McFadden has. Don't get me wrong, i think he will be a very good running back, but i don't know about great. If i was Oakland, i would only stay put if the pick was Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey, otherwise trading down and adding depth and young talent to an already young talented team could set us up for years to come. And let's not forget about Micheal Bush, who had he not broken his leg and come out early, might be considered a better prospect right now than Darren McFadden, and we got him, and for a hell of alot less money and risk.

Adding picks and looking towars the future is great, and if AL was lets say in his fiftys that would be the plan but with his age rising and health falling he has but only a couple of years left in the tank, he knows this and has spent like Snyder had been the last couple of years in free agency. I dont see him trading out the spot not only because of his age but because he wants to be able to draft someone that high that actually comes in and lives up to expectations. With everyone thinking that the raiders should trade out i can and believe Davis will o the exact opposite.

i think his age is the main reason for all these moves this off season, and to say that hes banking on a uncapped year in the future i dont buy it.
