NFL Mock Draft
First Round:
1) Dolphins- Chris Long DE Virginia
- The Dolphins know that they need to take a high character guy with this pick because they are going to be spending a lot of money of him, Chris is as hard a worker in this draft. It also allows them to trade Jason Taylor if they want.
2) Rams- Vernon Gholston DE Ohio St.
- They had 5.5 total sacks from there DEs last year, pitiful. Gholston instantly gives them a guy to go after QBs in the pass-happy NFC West.
3) Falcons- Jake Long LT Michigan
- With 3 second round picks they will be like the Browns and grab the franchise LT here, and pick up a QB latter on in the draft.
4) Raiders- Glenn Dorsey DT LSU
- This is JaMarcus Russell’s team now, and I have a feeling he will be in Al Davis’s ear telling him to bring in his former LSU teammate as the team’s replacement to the retired Warren Sapp.
5) Chiefs- Matt Ryan QB Boston College
- I have never thought that Croyle would be the leader of this team, and with all the praising of Ryan the Chiefs’s brass has been dishing out I think they are starting to think that the gun slinging Ryan is what this team needs to succeed.
6) Jets- Darren McFadden HB Arkansas
- The Jets have to get a home run threat on this offense. Every time they play the Pats they lose 10-6. McFadden is a player capable of scoring whenever he touches the ball.
7) Patriots- Leodis McKelvin CB Troy
- They lost 2 CBs in free agency and Wes Welker is now the No. 2 receiver and not the slot receiver, so McKelvin gives them a solid corner with return ability.
8) Ravens- Ryan Clady LT Boise St.
- With Ryan gone, they look to tackle or corner as their biggest needs. Jonathan Ogden is retiring, so Clady looks like the pick, to protect whoever they play at QB.
9) Bengals- Sedrick Ellis DT USC
- Justin Smith was the leader of this DL and he left in free agency. Ellis fills the leadership role and a big need on the interior of the Bengals line.
10) Saints- Keith Rivers OLB USC
- Dan Morgan and Jonathan Vilma were brought in this off-season, Rivers completes the revamping of this LB core.
11) Bills- Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB Tennessee St.
- This is a deep receiver draft and they will hope to fill the need for a tall WR in round 2. DRC is a player whose stock is soaring and the bills may take him at 11 to give them the shutdown corner they used to have with Nate Clements.
12) Broncos- Chris Williams LT Vanderbilt
- Cutler needs a LT after Matt Lepis retired, and why not go to his old school for his blindside protector.
13) Panthers- Derrick Harvey DE Florida
- Peppers had a bad year. Harvey could help, generating rush from the over side.
14) Bears- Rashard Mendenhall HB Illinois
- Benson has been a bust, and you need to be able to run in the winter months to win the NFC North. Mendenhall has the strength and speed to do just that, run in the cold.
15) Lions- Mike Jenkins CB USF
- Brian Kelly was signed and he will be able to mentor Jenkins on the way to play corner in the Tampa 2 cover defense.
16) Cardinals- Aqib Talib CB Kansas
- Stellar athlete. He will be a starter at CB from day one and may be able to help in the return game.
17) Vikings- Phillip Merling DE Clemson
- Someone on the Vikings roster of DEs has to rush the passer; no one has done it consistently so far…so Merling will get his chance.
18) Texans- Jeff Otah LT Pittsburgh
- They have needed a LT since 2002, enough said.
19) Eagles- Malcolm Kelley WR Oklahoma
- Big tall receiver for McNabb to find in the end zone.
20) Buccaneers- Kentwan Balmer DT UNC
- He and Chris Hovan could form a very tough interior for the Bucs’ D.
21) Redskins- Calais Campbell DE Miami (FL.)
- He has had poor workouts as of late, but watch the tape and you will see a big, tall, and very physical DE. Just what the Redskins need.
22) Cowboys- Felix Jones HB Arkansas
- Jerry Jones gets the burner from his alma mater to team with Barber.
23) Steelers- Branden Albert OG Virginia
- Steps in and replaces Alan Faneca. Personally I think he has really good potential.
24) Titans- Limas Sweed WR Texas
- Vince Young needs a weapon, Sweed is one is knows how to use.
25) Seahawks- Jonathan Stewart HB Oregon
- Will be a able to heal and then the local star will pair with Julius Jones and give the Seahawks a very good running game.
26) Jaguars- Kenny Phillips S Miami (FL.)
- He and Reggie Nelson will be a pair pestering safeties Peyton will hate to throw on.
27) Chargers- Sam Baker LT USC
- They cut Shane Olivea, and replace him with a three time Pac-10 performer.
28) Cowboys- DeSean Jackson WR Cal
- Jackson will replace Terry Glenn and he and Pac Man will be a great returning duo.
29) 49ers- Quentin Groves DE/OLB Auburn
- Justin Smith will command a tackle’s attention, so Groves will easily penetrate.
30) Packers- Dustin Keller TE Purdue
- Workout warrior and a two time Big Ten selection, will compliment Donald Lee.
31) Giants- Dan Connor OLB Penn St.
- He will start alongside Pierce and “Kiwi”. Seems to be a Tom Coughlin kind of guy.
Second Round:
32) Dolphins- Gosder Cherilus LT Boston College
- Continue to build along the lines. This time, they give John Beck some protection.
33) Rams- Devin Thomas WR Michigan St.
- They need a new slot to replace the released Isaac Bruce. Thomas’s stock is soaring.
34) Falcons- Joe Flacco QB Delaware
- Flacco is apparently the guy they like. No one from Louisville has a chance at this pick.
35) Chiefs- Anthony Collins LT Kansas
- Ryan needs someone to protect him. Collins had a great Junior year and could play LT.
36) Jets- Jerrod Mayo ILB Tennessee
- Mayo and Harris could be terrors in the Jets’ 3-4 defense.
37) Falcons- Antoine Cason CB Arizona
- Trading Hall was necessary, but they now need to replace him.
38) Ravens- Brian Brohom QB Louisville
- If he is here, I think they will draft him and start the draft party early.
39) 49ers- Mario Manningham WR Michigan
- Martz loves to throw the ball and Mario will give him a burner to catch the deep ball.
40) Saints- Pat Sims DT Auburn
- Sims is a very talented player that could very well start as a rookie.
41) Bills- James Hardy WR Indiana
- At 6’6 Hardy is the perfect compliment to the 5’10 Lee Evans.
42) Broncos- Earl Bennett WR Vanderbilt
- Another player from Vandy, this one will play in the slot.
43) Panthers- Carl Nicks RT Nebraska
- Jordan Gross moved to LT, they need a starter at RT. Nicks could compete for the job.
44) Bears- Chad Henne QB Michigan
- Henne will wait for Rex to stink it up again, and then he will be the starter.
45) Lions- Jamal Charles HB Texas
- He is a burner, and with this team’s new commitment to running, he should star early.
46) Bengals- Early Doucet WR LSU
- Chad Johnson may not be with them in 08, time to prepare.
47) Vikings- Fred Davis TE USC
- I can’t name their TE, so I think they should draft one and Davis is a tremendous talent.
48) Falcons- Trevor Laws DT Norte Dame
- Laws will start (like Pat Sims) from day one for the Falcons.
49) Eagles- Reggie Smith CB Oklahoma
- Can play either CB or S and with Lito Sheppard on the block and Dawkins age, he fits.
50) Cardinals- Chris Johnson HB East Carolina
- Edge is done. Johnson has crazy speed and will replace James midway into the season.
51) Redskins- Josh Barrett S Arizona State
- Sean Taylor’s replacement is found here.
52) Buccaneers- Justin King CB Penn St.
- The CBs for the Bucs are getting old, so its time to inject some youth.
53) Steelers- Brandon Flowers CB Virginia Tech
- Bryant McFadden may not be a Steeler next yr. Rosenhaus, his agent, wants big payday.
54) Titans- Curtis Lofton ILB Oklahoma
- Ryan Fowler is their starter. An upgrade is needed.
55) Seahawks- Dre Moore DT Maryland
- Ellis Wyms and Chuck Darby are gone so depth is needed.
56) Packers- Charles Godfrey CB Iowa
- Hardworking former safety known for his high character and work ethic.
57) Dolphins- John David Booty QB USC
- If John Beck or Josh McCown doesn’t work it’s his job.
58) Jaguars- Andre Woodson QB Kentucky
- Garrard has never been through a 16 game season as a starter and not gotten hurt.
59) Colts- Chilo Rachal OG USC
- Jake Scott left via Free Agency and its time to replace him.
60) Packers- Ali Highsmith OLB LSU
- High could be a great special teamer. Also could be a spot starter.
61) Cowboys- Tracy Porter CB Indiana
- Gives them a nickel back behind Newman and Henry.
62) Patriots- Matt Forte HB Tulane
- Power back to complement the speedy Maroney. He has great hands.
63) Giants- Lawrence Jackson DE USC
- Tuck (DT), Kiwi (OLB), and Strahan and Osi (DE) are all starters so a backup is needed.
