Former Giants GM Accorsi advising Blank

Falcons still searching for general manager before hiring coach

Falcons owner Arthur Blank has enlisted former New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi as an adviser in his search for a new general manager and a coach, according to Kim Shreckengost, chief of staff for the Falcons.

Accorsi, who retired in January, is working in conjunction with Blank and team president Rich McKay, Shreckengost said. McKay's involvement shows that he has not been completely removed from making football decisions, although he is working to find his replacement as GM.

Last week, Blank said McKay, who has served as president and general manager since 2003, would no longer be GM once a new person is hired. He will retain his post as team president, Blank said.

Accorsi joined the Giants in 1994 as an assistant general manager before being promoted to general manager in 1998. Blank is seeking outside counsel to help generate an extensive list of potential candidates and to examine their backgrounds. Once a new general manager is hired, he will hire the next head coach.

Although Blank has not commented on potential general managers, Green Bay director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie, San Diego assistant general manager Buddy Nix, Dallas vice president of college and pro scouting Jeff Ireland and Kansas City vice president of player personnel Bill Kuharich are considered some of the top candidates who are not general managers with their respective teams.

Coaching candidates include two Falcons assistants, offensive coordinator Hue Jackson and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer; Marty Schottenheimer, a longtime NFL coach with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego; San Francisco assistant head coach Mike Singletary; Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett; Green Bay assistant head coach Winston Moss; St. Louis defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, a former coach of the Saints; and two Patriots assistants, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and assistant head coach Dante Scarnecchia.

Blank and McKay are expected to begin seeking permission to interview candidates as soon as regular-season games end Sunday
