CLEVELAND

One year ago, no one knew Derek Anderson, including Anderson. No one knew what the Browns benchwarmer could do. Sure, there was a glimpse or two, but that could’ve been blind luck.

Now, Anderson is taking the Tony Romo approach to NFL stardom — minus, of course, the pop star girlfriends and tabloid headlines.

So there was Anderson on Sunday night, still thawing out from 3 1/2 hours of arctic football, trying to take it all in. What makes Anderson different than Charlie Frye and Tim Couch is, he doesn’t bother to wrap his mind around it. There’s no first-pick hype to live up to, no local-boy-makes-good storyline to force.

Anderson is having a Pro Bowl-caliber season. Now let’s be serious, when the voting is announced today, don’t expect to see Anderson close to Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.

Brady is having a historic season. Anderson is having a Manning-like season.

Manning has thrown for about 200 more yards and two more touchdowns than Anderson this season. They’ve each thrown 14 interceptions. The biggest difference between the two is passer rating, where Manning has 10 points on Anderson’s 85.8, which is nothing to sneeze at.

Anderson, though, seems to have the heady stats under control. What would he have said if someone told him four months ago he could make the Pro Bowl and lead the Browns to the playoffs?

“I’d have said, ‘No,’ ” Anderson said, and then he laughed the kind of belly laugh that indicated fiction becoming reality in his life.

While it is unfair to peg one player as the reason for Cleveland’s rags-to-riches transformation, much of it can be credited to Anderson. The Browns are tied with the Steelers for the division lead, are on the cusp of a playoff berth and turning heads all over the league.

“Obviously, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Anderson said. “I’m really proud of the way the guys bounced back and come in and work hard and want to get better. Hopefully, we can hit a peak and finish it off.”

There is no doubt Anderson is the beneficiary of an improved offensive line and growth of Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. Yes, Offensive Coordinator Rob Chudzinski has breathed life into a previously dormant, dying offense, but someone has to execute it.

Anderson is having a better season than Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers and Vince Young. If someone had told you a Browns QB would be playing better football than aforementioned throwers, you’d have said, “Who, Brady Quinn?”

Head Coach Romeo Crennel is guarded — at best — in his praise of Anderson. Maybe he is the lucky one who happened to be the guy under center when the offensive line solidified, the receivers grew up and a coordinator came up with a plan. Would any of that have happened with Frye? Couch?

No.

Teammates have made Anderson a better player, but he’s returning the favor.

In the snow and cold on a wind-blown Sunday, Anderson laughed in the huddle and joked about the conditions. When it was over, the shadow setting on his career season, he sounded like a kid playing the position and the role.

“I felt like a kid out there,” he said. “I was having fun with it.”

He was talking about the snow. He could’ve been talking about the season, too.

..........the absolute best group of Browns fans anywhere in the Universe.

I have to let the brother dawgs in on the significance of our most recent guest.

I shared how "limaguy" came to be my handle.

A friend and I were messing around and making up a story about two guys from Lima being hired by Uncle Al (Lerner) to come up to Cleveland and waste the Fat Dawg (Big Dawg).

Most people that I know in real life are not big fans of Big Dawg and feel like he is in it mostly for the glory he can generate for himself, and his tribute of being our biggest fan doesn't sit well with me and a whole lot of others.

Anyhow we kept calling ourselves the "two guys from Lima" as we beat it to death and wore it out as our custom is, laughing and cracking up till our guts hurt. We had designed one heck of a mission to waste the Fat Dawg.

About that time I came across the Browns board on rivals.com, which was where the address took me from the Browns News Illustrated.

I didn't have any time to come up with a handle and the "two guys from Lima" was fresh and the rest is history.

Sometimes I wish I took time to have a dawg related handle, but limaguy stuck and that is how I got from there to here. I always liked Mad Dawg! :mob:

kardiackid is the friend who I was cutting up with who came up with the two guys from Lima term, and he is more than a pal and a buddy but he is one of those real friends who you only get to have a select few of in a lifetime.

I know I can count on you guys to treat him like the brother he is.

Brother kardiac you make my day by being a part of us here at the CyberPOUND.

These guys are some very cool folks and for me it's like getting to hang with my friends and enjoy our Browns together.

Welcome again bro!
