View Full Version : Why do we need McFadden again?

I really like TJ and Leon. The more I watch TJ the more he reminds me of Curt with more power. He does a lot of things very well. I think the Jets should get a bigger back (who costs a LOT less) for short yardage, not a guy like McFaddan. I'm fine with TJ and Leon.

First of all IMO the point is moot as I am convinced he'll be off the board before we pick unless we trade up, and I'm not in favor of that.
But even if he was there I agree with you and I would go in a different direction. Trade down or a defensive player.

Give me Mendanhall from Illinois or preferably Jon Stewart from Oregon in the early second if they declare. Than use our first on Jake Long or Lauranitis depending on free agency.

I would go OLine, DLine OLB, CB and even WR before RB.

Depends what we do in FA. lets say for sake of argueemtn we sign Alan faneca, Max Starks and Karlos dansby. And picking 3rd, we have a dynamic, expolsive RB staring at us. Now I ike TJ...he a nice player. But if I have the ability to add a legit game breaker to my O...I do it.
Yes, we need OL help first but my arguemtn has always been to try and upgrade the OL via FA rather then the draft and use the draft to get expolsive skill players IN their prime and under rookie contracts.

Nice thread. My personal feelings about McFadden aside, the RB position just isn't top priority. Football is won and lost in the trenches and we need more talent upfront. Chris Long might weigh as much as Seymour or Canty but it's not like he can't pack on another 10 lbs. He already has experience in the scheme and has the kind of skillset that would allow you to play him at DE in 4-3 looks, inside in nickel situations, at DE in the 3-4, or even stand him up and have him rush out of the 3-4 every now and then. If Long isn't an option I'd consider McFadden then. I just think it's too much of a luxury pick for a team that really isn't in a position to make one of those unless we somehow fill a ton of holes in FA. I don't think we need either player necessarily but I think Long is the guy that makes our team better.

Yah and the fact remains that Jones (even tho banged up) has turned in a very good season stats wise. While he hasn't really been the dominating type of guy teams fear, he's been plenty good to win games with.

To me the only reason to take DMac for the Jets would be is if they simply felt he was the only elite talent left where they pick. I was campaigning for AD for the cards last year even tho he clearly wasn't what we needed (we have edge and needed OL badly), because I felt he was the only elite talent available at #5 for us if Joe Thomas was off the board.

I think that the Messrs Tangini are planning to do some damage in FA.
I offer the following as evidence:
-We know that Chris Baker had a re-renegotiation that moved a lot of future $$$ into this year
-SI has reported that we have $27 mil of cap space for next year right now.
-adamjt13 previously reported that we had $17 mil of cap space for next year.
-If both adam & SI are correct we created $10 mil in cap space since the season started, which would indicate that more than Baker's contract was renegotiated.
Why create that kind of cap room unless you plan to use it??
Bring on some high priced spread FA's.

Kind of off topic but I don't really like Starks. He doesn't even start anymore and is a very suspect pass blocker. Last thing we need is Anthony Clement part 2.

Totally agree there. Perfect comparison IMO.

By all means, pass on McFadden if you guys draft ahead of us. I'd much rather see the Jets draft for need like they always do than get the best player available. Then again, if you manage to get Chris Long then you've probably done alright.
My guess? Boos will be raining down on the Jets pick like the "good old days".

Where is this well-established trend of "drafting for need?"

I'm betting Jerry Jones would give up our 1st, the browns 1st, and our second for that draft spot. Might take more though, I dont know.

Yeah, given that both 1sts are likely to be below pick 20 it could take your entire 1st day. That or both 1sts and something for 09.

Leon is an explosive playmaker in the mold of Philly's Westbrook. He should get more touches. Thomas Jones hasn't blown me away this season.
I wouldn't be against the Jets drafting McFadden to replace TJ.

I keep hearing how TJ is a brusing, powerful runner! TBH, I see a small back who gets pushed, and downed quite easily. could just be his slight hesitation in short yardage situations though and of course our weak OL

Leon appears to be the more powerful inside runner of the 2 to me.

The knock on TJ has always been he goes down a lot on first contact.

He was a speedy slasher coming out of college, hes gotten tougher but thats still his essential nature.

TJ makes a lot more yards after contact then you're giving him credit for. He must've gotten 75% of those yards in the Pitt game by shedding arm tackles and churning his feet when wrapped up for more yards. In goaline situations though not many backs are getting into the endzone behind our OL.

once in a blue moon. That's not to say I wouldn't expect a big improvement from TJ when our OL gets upgraded. I'd be happy to keep him, even if he's only got a couple years left after this one.
Jerry just mite bite at the whole draft for his homeboy, especially if DMac tears it up in their bowl game. Now that would be payback for Herschel. If we get all those rings Dallas got, wouldn't that be sweet.

I knew someone would bring up the pitt game, lol.. but those efforts are few and far between so far. leon squeezes every yard when things breakdown (and they usually do) he finds a crevice and drives into it. TJ gets caught flat footed too often. but yes, he was stellar in the pitt game and we need more of that

It wasn't just the Pitt game, although that was his best performance as a Jet by far. He's been impressive more often than not. I think a lot of folks soured on him after the Baltimore game, where he had a bad game, but he was excellent the very next week facing Miami.
He lacks the size of a bruising power runner, but NO ONE can question this guy's heart and determination. That's why I say he reminds me of Curt. That and the fact that he picks up the blitz well, is a solid passing outlet option, and that he cuts back well and sees the holes a lot of backs miss (i.e. his vision). The other thing he does very well is that he has the ability to "jump" sideways, out of a bad situation, and still get instant acceleration. I have re-watched some of the Jets earlier games recently and I think this guy is really underrated - especially when one considers the fact that the Jets' OLine has been shoddy all year and the passing game hasn't been a plus to balance the defense very often. He's shown me all I need to see to pass on "RunDMC", unless he happens to be the BAP and no one will trade up.
Oh, and we also have Leon so this would be a hugely luxurious pick. jmho
